According to the notion of demographic transition theory, civilizations go from a pre-modern era of high fertility and high mortality to a post-modern era of low fertility and low mortality.
Origins of the theory-The idea is based on an analysis of demographic history created in 1929 by American demographer Warren Thompson (1887–1973).

Frank W. Notestein created a more formal theory of demographic transition between the 1940s and 1950s.
