El Imperio Inca contenía grandes cantidades de oro y plata, por esto se hizo, en el siglo XVI, un blanco para los españoles. Fue conquistada en 1531–1533 por el español, Francisco Pizarro. El movimiento de independencia lo dirigió José de San Martín de Argentina y Simón Bolívar de Venezuela. San Martín proclamó la independencia del Perú en Lima el 28 de julio de 1821, pero se consolidó después de la batalla de Ayacucho, tres años más tarde. Después de la independencia, el Perú y sus vecinos participaron en intermitentes disputas territoriales con Chile y Ecuador. Después de años de guerras y negociaciones, Perú logró asentarse y reconstruirse, alrededor de 1884. Después de pasar por diferentes gobiernos (aristocracia, militarismo, democracia) y crisis (terrorismo con Sendero Luminoso en los años 80) o la hiperinflación con Alan García como Presidente, Perú inició una etapa de reconstrucción durante la Presidencia de Alberto Fujimori.
