Goddard even had an "Anniversary Day" where, according to his diary, he "imagined how wonderful it would be to make some device which had even the possibility of ascending to Mars." He did this while perched on top of a tree in his backyard. In his early twenties, Goddard attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a degree in physics. He then tried Clark University, where he earned his Master's and, a year later, his Ph. D.
