China emits 30% of air pollution in the world. China is also the wordls leading science and technology super power. But with them becoming more developed they've also become one of the most polluted countries. In some places there isn' clean drinking wate from all the kinds of pollution they make.
Shanghai is Chinas largest city with almost 27 million people living there. But despite it's population it is not one of China's most polluted cities. Xi'an, Shaanxi Province is. as they've been producing alot of thermal energy fom factories in the city. Their population is almost 9 million, which is somewhat a small population for china. But what have they done to treat their bad air quality? In 2022, China invested $21Billion dollars into cleaner air quality including upgrading 60,000 coal-burning boilers and converting more than 4,000 public buses to run on natural gas. But despite their attempts they still remain as one of the most polluted countries and one of the most over populated countries.
According to the world health Organaization, the pollution in China is bad enough to penetrate lungs and cause diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections. Their largest producer of pollution is coal-fired power plants. In the 1970's china had many industrial cities runnning on coal powered cities which later caused many enviormental problems such as acid rain. As we can still see now, those affects stil carry on to this day.
The most important effect from China's bad ai quality is birth defects. The National Institue of Health ran a study that showed the increasing amount of pollution in China caused many birthdefects in the first trimester of pregnancies. Also according to MDPI, it's estimaed thta 800,000- 1.2milliion children acrosss china can suffer from birthdefects and half of those are from pollution. Not only are the fetus's in the womb not safe, but kids across Chinaa are more vulnerable to get affected by the pollution. According to NIH.gov " Adverse effects of combustion-related air pollution include reduced fetal and child growth, pulmonary disease including asthma, developmental impairment, and increased risk of cancer." which in other words means as children are growing, they can still get diseases. It's common in China to get asthma and it's also their major public health challenge.
