The Russo-Japanese War, a military confrontation that lasted from 1904 to 1905, saw Japan emerge as the first Asian nation to ever defeat a European power after successfully pressuring Russia to give up its policy of expansion in East Asia.
Since Ivan the Terrible's rule in the 16th century, Russia had pursued an expansionist agenda east of the Urals, in Siberia, and in the Far East. Japan has worried Russian incursion would thwart its efforts to create a sphere of influence in Korea and Manchuria ever since the First Sino-Japanese War ended in 1895.
Following the protracted Japanese siege of Port Arthur, the corrupt Russian commander gave up the garrison in January 1905 without consulting his officers, despite having enough supplies and ammunition to maintain its defence.
When Russian troops led by Aleksey Kuropatkin withdrew, the intense combat in and around Mukden came to an end in March 1905. Russia agreed to a peace settlement after the decisive naval Battle of Tsushima gave the Japanese the upper hand. By signing the Treaty of Portsmouth, Russia ended its aggressive policy in eastern Asia, and Japan effectively took over control of most of Manchuria and Korea.
