Read the excerpt from the play Apple Picking.

Scene Two

In the kitchen of the old farmhouse. There is an old dusty table and chairs, but everything else including the stove is gone. The windows are broken, the curtains tattered, and the wallpaper peeling. The wind is picking up and blowing through. The children are calming down. Mischa looks out the broken window where a large dead tree sits close to the house, while Luke sits at the old table. The sack of apples sits on the table.

Mischa: It's almost here Luke. The branches on the trees are swaying all over the place.

Luke: (Looking at the old tree through the window) Come away from the window Mischa. It's a really bad storm, that's for sure.

Mischa: (sitting down in the chair opposite Luke.) I think it's a tornado.

Luke: It's not a tornado, but those are some heavy winds.

The wind picks up and the curtains sway violently. Something smacks up against the side of the house.

Luke: What was that? It's picking up.

Mischa: Where are Mom and Dad? Why aren't they here to help us?

Luke: Never mind that. We need to worry about ourselves right now. I think we should go down to the …

Suddenly, a tree branch hits the window smashing it even more than it was. Luke and Mischa scream.

Mischa: (Yelling) To the basement!

The children run toward the basement when Mischa stops and turns back.

Luke: (Still yelling) What are you doing? Come back!

Mischa: (Still yelling) The apples! I need to grab the apples!

Luke: Mischa no!

Mischa runs to grab the apples. She gets a hold of the sack and turns around toward the basement again. As she gets to the basement door, the old large tree snaps, cracks, and falls through the kitchen wall. She is okay, but shaken.

Scene Three

The children are in the dark basement and can hear cracks, smashes, and the wind howling. They are holding each other and are quite scared.

Luke: (Trying to be brave) Everything is going to be okay.

Mischa: (Trying to be brave) Where is Mom and Dad? Why aren't they here yet?

The sound of the cracks, smashes, and wind start to die down.

Mischa: I think the storm is ending.

Luke: Yeah, I think so.

Mischa: (Heading up the stairs to peek) I'm just going to check if everything is okay.

Luke: Be careful.

As Mischa opens the basement door, there is debris everywhere. She can't get the door completely open. Just then, she hears more smashing, like glass being broken.

Mischa: (Turning back to Luke) Oh know! The storms back! How are we going to get home now?

Luke: That doesn't make sense, let me take a look.

As Luke tries to push the door open, it swings open easily. It is being pulled by their Mom and Dad on the other side.

Dad: Luke! Mischa! Are you okay? Your Mom and I were so worried. We tried to find you, but the storm kept us from getting to you until now.

Mom: (overjoyed) You found them? Oh Mischa, Luke! You must have been so scared. (Hugging them) I was so worried.

Mischa: (Holding the sack of apples.) We're so happy to see you! (Handing the apples to her mother) We picked you some apples.

Luke: And you'd better make the best apple pie ever after all of that.

The whole family laughs as they hug each other.

Secondly, we must take into account the correct conjugation of the verbs, in this aspect we must pay attention to conjugate the verb properly with the subject (number, and proper gender).

Read the story Escape From Space:

Ever since Deana was a child, she dreamed of flying into outer space. As a young girl growing up near Orlando, she had many opportunities to watch space shuttle launches. She would wake up extra early on launch days, sneak out her second story window, and perch herself on the roof. She would stare at the shooting cloud and wonder who was inside and when it would be her turn.

Twenty years had passed since those days as a wistful child. Now Deana was seeing a shuttle from a whole different angle, from inside. Deana was sometimes still in shock that this was her life now. She thought about all the years of hard work, all of the times she decided to train and study instead of dating and going to parties like other people her age. She held back a tear as she tried to swallow. The view was spectacular. Earth was barely in sight at this point and ahead of her was pure openness.

Suddenly, Deana blinked into reality. Sergeant Reece grabbed her arm and looked at her with terror in his eyes. There was a fuel leak. At this rate there wouldn’t be enough fuel to get the crew home. Deana took a deep breath. She was terrified but prepared. Deana ordered the crew to patch up the fuel tank. She adjusted the speed so that the shuttle did not burn as much fuel. She radioed ground control for help. They were able to redirect the shuttle back to Earth.

Deana's quick thinking and bravery saved everyone on that shuttle, but all Deana could think about is how her journey had to be cut short. As she looked back at the quickly approaching Earth, she thought to herself, "Well, there's always next time."

The options that makes proper use of quotation marks to quote the text and explain how Deana saved the space shuttle is option D, as explained below.

How to quote a text

After reading the text provided, we must answer how Deana was able to save the space shuttle. When we read the answer choices, we realize that all of them provide basically the same answer.

What we are supposed to do here is identify the answer choices that correctly makes use of commas and quotation marks to quote the text. We can already eliminate options A and C because they do not use quotation marks at all to set off the quote from the text, which goes from the word "Deana's" to "short".

We are left with options B and D, which are very similar. Option D, however, sounds a bit more formal. Also, the use of a comma right before the quote is unnecessary, which makes D a better choice over B.

Therefore, option D is our answer. It correctly makes use of quotation marks.

Past event
