Hasbro Inc. HAS 2.11% ▲ is beefing up inventory levels to make sure it has enough toys and games available under the tree for the critical holiday season.

The maker of Monopoly board games and My Little Pony dolls on Tuesday reported holding $867.5 million of inventory at the end of June, up nearly 75% from a year earlier. That represents Hasbro's highest quarterly inventory levels going back nearly three decades, according to publicly available data.

The rush to stock up on toys comes after supply-chain problems last year wreaked havoc on the industry, with delays in getting some toys to shelves and higher-than-normal out-of- stock levels in the weeks ahead of Christmas,

The higher inventory levels came as Hasbro reported a net profit of $142 million, or $1.02 a share, for the period ended June 26, compared with a loss of $22.9 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding items such as acquisition costs and amortization, Hasbro said per-share earnings were $1.15 a share.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of 94 cents a share.

Revenue rose 1% to $1.34 billion, with unfavorable foreign exchange rates denting the top line by 3%. Analysts forecast $1.37 billion in revenue, according to FactSet.

Results were lifted by its Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment, which includes games like Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro recently successfully fended off a board challenge from an activist that was pushing the company to explore spinning off that unit, among other changes.

Hasbro's results come ahead of its main rival Mattel Inc., which is scheduled to report

second-quarter earnings on Thursday.
