Early earth's atmosphere was anoxic that means no o2 was available . so prokaryotes used to obtain their energy from chemicals , with the evolution of photosynthesis   many years back , some prokaryotes such as cyanobacteria discovered how to extract energy from the sun by photosynthesis. Which resulted in the accumulation of o2 in the water bodies which oxidize iron in the water bodies to form iron oxide deposits . Afterwards , all the iron in the water bodies was oxidized , free o2 started to accumulate in the atmosphere.

The origin of eukaryotic cells are well defined by  the endosymbiotic theory . This theory says that the large cells engulfed small cells .But they were not digested by large ones . Instead , they  lived within the large cells and evolved into organelles .

Hence , that's why prokaryotes were important to early life .
