What is capillary action and why is it important

Answers

Answer 1

Capillary action can be defined as the ascension of liquids through slim tube, cylinder or permeable substance due to adhesive and cohesive forces interacting between the liquid and the surface , another possible definition is that it's the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity.

Without capillary action, the water level in all tubes would be the same. Smaller diameter tubes have more relative surface area inside the tube, allowing capillary action to pull water up higher than in the larger diameter tubes.

biologically it's important in plants and trees , Water is brought high up in trees by branching; evaporation at the leaves creating depressurization; probably by osmotic pressure added at the roots; and possibly at other locations inside the plant, especially when gathering humidity with air roots

Answer:

D. To show condensation, you add energy to change water vapor into liquid water; to show evaporation, you add energy to change liquid water into water vapor.

When condensation occurs, gas turns to liquid, and when evaporation occurs,  liquid turns to gas.

B. could also be correct, but D. seems to be the better fit.

Answer:

To show condensation , you must decrease the temperature within the cycle ; to show evaporation , you must increase the temperature .

Explanation:

Condensation : condensation is nothing but the change of water vapour into liquid water . it happens when the water vapour reaches from a hot area to a cold area . for instance ~ when you pour hot tea in a cup and cover it with a plate. after few seconds you would see droplets of water there . this means that the water vapour which was in liquid form , when touched the cold surface of plate , it changed into liquid water .

Evaporation : It is the conversion of hot liquid into water vapour . just reverse of above phenomena .

Autotrophic means making your own food, providing it without consuming other organisms. Heterotrophic is the opposite: think of the prefixes auto- meaning self and hetero- meaning different.

Most plants use photosynthesis to get energy from the sun; that's their own source, no eating other organisms necessary. Examples are grasses, flowers, trees.. most mainstream plants. There are a few exceptions, like something nasty like a Venus flytrap.

Answer:

Uniform

Explanation:

Complete question -

The organism reproduce asexually. Were the offspring of this organism uniformmeaning they look the same as each other and the parent, or were they diversemeaning they express a variety of appearances? Explain your answer.

Solution

It is given that the organism is reproducing asexually; hence its entire offspring will have resemblance to their parent as well as among themselves. There is no scope of genetic variation in asexually producing offspring. However when an organism undergo sexual reproduction, there are high chances of it producing offspring with varied characteristics as the parents gamete carry genes of ancestors and allows for various recombination. Unlike sexual reproduction, the organism producing asexually produces similar gametes and hence offspring one generation after the other.

Suri designed an experiment to plant lima bean seeds. Her variable was to change what kind of light each plant received. She used

a different kind of light with each plant. She hypothesized that the plant grown under the natural sunlight would have the greatest

amount of growth. What can she conclude after the results of her experiment?

A) photosynthesis does not require any light for a plant

B) plants grow best when they are grown under a black light

C) photosynthesis can happen under lights that are not the sun

D) plants cannot grow unless they are exposed to natural sunlight

Answers

Answer:

Option C

Explanation:

Light from the sun (sunlight) is the most suitable form of light energy that   necessary for plant growth and blooming, but artificial light can also be useful in helping plants grow. For example, low-light foliage plants such as the peace lily can grow quite readily in offices that do not have windows with just about enough artificial light.

Answer:

The correct answer is C: "photosynthesis can happen under lights that are not the sun"

Explanation:

A) photosynthesis does not require any light for a plant. This is not correct, as in order to photosynthesize any plant need light. In its absence, the plant does not obtain any energy and is not able to produce organic matter.

B) plants grow best when they are grown under a black light: This is not correct because, in comparison with other lights of different colors, plants grown under a black light are ones that show the less growth rate.

C) photosynthesis can happen under lights that are not the sun: This is correct. Photosynthesis can indeed occur under other lights. There are different factors to take into count if we want plants to grow under artificial conditions, such as the amount of light, times of light per day and the color of the light.

D) plants cannot grow unless they are exposed to natural sunlight: This is not correct. Although sunlight is the best option for any plant to grow in the correct time and form, these organisms might also grow under artificial lights of different colors or wavelengths. The plant might respond in different ways, depending on the light it is exposed to, but eventually, it will show some growth.
