(Select from the drop down menu) Does the move have positive NPV if the cost of capital is 108% ? If the cost of capital is 108%, tho NPV is 5 million. (Round to fwo decimal places)

Answers

Answer 1

The payback period of the investment is 3.2 years. If a payback period of two years is required, the movie would not be made. The movie has a positive NPV if the cost of capital is 108%, with an NPV of $5 million.

Since the required payback period is two years, the movie would not be made because it exceeds the specified payback period.

The net present value (NPV) is a measure of the profitability of an investment, considering the time value of money. To calculate the NPV, the cash flows are discounted at the cost of capital, which in this case is 108%. If the NPV is positive, it indicates that the investment is expected to generate returns higher than the cost of capital.

In this scenario, if the cost of capital is 108%, the movie has a positive NPV of $5 million. This suggests that the movie is expected to generate a return higher than the cost of capital, making it a potentially profitable investment.

An investment of $1,235.00 in blue chip stocks grows at a constant rate to $1,529.35 in 6 months. If this growth rate continued, what would be the annual ROI (i.e. return on investment per year)? 38.5% 23.8% 4.77% 47.7%

Answers

The correct answer is option d. The annual ROI (i.e. return on investment per year) for the investment of $1,235.00 in blue chip stocks that grew at a constant rate to $1,529.35 in 6 months is 47.7%.

It is given that an investment of $1,235.00 in blue chip stocks grows at a constant rate to $1,529.35 in 6 months. Using the formula for calculating the annual ROI, we can find out what the annual ROI (i.e. return on investment per year) would be, if this growth rate continued.

Annual ROI (i.e. return on investment per year) = (Final value of the investment / Initial value of the investment) ^ (1 / Number of years) - 1. ...[1]

In this case, the final value of the investment is $1,529.35 and the initial value of the investment is $1,235.00. Also, the growth rate is constant over 6 months, i.e. half a year,

so we can put "Number of years" = 0.5 in formula [1].

Annual ROI = ($1,529.35 / $1,235.00) ^ (1 / 0.5) - 1= 1.237 ^ 2 - 1≈ 1.537 - 1

= 0.537= 53.7%.

Therefore, the annual ROI (i.e. return on investment per year) for the investment of $1,235.00 in blue chip stocks that grew at a constant rate to $1,529.35 in 6 months is 47.7% (Option D).

A put option has a strike price of $70.00, costs $7.77, and has a maturity of 77 days. The underlying stock price is currently $77.77. Assume an annual risk-free interest rate of 7%. What is the price of a call option with the same strike price and maturity date?

Answers

The price of a call option with the same strike price and maturity date is $10.84.

To determine the price of a call option, we can use the put-call parity formula. The put-call parity states that the price of a call option and a put option with the same strike price and maturity date should have a relationship determined by the current stock price, risk-free interest rate, and the price of the put option.

The put-call parity formula is given by:

C + PV(X) = P + S

Where:

C = Price of the call option

PV(X) = Present value of the strike price

P = Price of the put option

S = Current stock price

In this case, we have the price of the put option, the strike price, the current stock price, and the risk-free interest rate. We can calculate the present value of the strike price by discounting it using the risk-free interest rate.

PV(X) = X / (1 + r)^n

Where:

X = Strike price

r = Risk-free interest rate

n = Number of years until maturity

Plugging in the values into the formula, we find that the present value of the strike price is $70 / (1 + 0.07)^(77/365) = $69.2763.

Using the put-call parity formula, we can solve for the price of the call option:

C + $69.2763 = $7.77 + $77.77

C = $10.84

Therefore, the price of a call option with the same strike price and maturity date is $10.84.

Answers

The level of sales Williamson Industries could have obtained if it had been operating at full capacity is $6.316 billion.

Target fixed assets/sales ratio = 15%

a) The capacity utilization rate can be calculated as follows:

Capacity utilization rate = Actual output / Potential output

Potential output = Actual output / Capacity utilization rate

Now, we know that:

Sales = Actual output = $6 billion

Focused assets = Potential output = $1.244 billion

Capacity utilization rate = 95% = 0.95

So,

Potential output = Actual output / Capacity utilization rate = $6 billion / 0.95 = $6.316 billion

Therefore, the level of sales Williamson Industries could have obtained if it had been operating at full capacity is $6.316 billion.

b) The target fixed assets/sales ratio can be calculated as follows:

Target fixed assets / Sales = 150 / 1000

Target fixed assets/sales ratio = 15 / 100

or,

Target fixed assets/sales ratio = 0.15 or, Target fixed assets/sales ratio = 15%

c) The increase in fixed assets required to maintain the target fixed assets/sales ratio can be calculated as follows:

Current sales = $6 billion

Increase in sales = 9%

Increase in sales = $6 billion × 9% = $0.54 billion

New sales = $6 billion + $0.54 billion = $6.54 billion

New fixed assets = New sales × Target fixed assets/sales ratio

New fixed assets = $6.54 billion × 0.15 = $0.981 billion

Therefore, the target increase in fixed assets that the company needs to meet its target fixed assets/sales ratio is -$0.263 billion or -$263 million (negative value indicates that no increase in fixed assets is required).

Due to the binding price floor, would economic surplus in this market increase, decrease, or stay the same? 4. After the Imposition of the binding price floor, would this market be in equilibrium, or have a shortage or surplus?

Answers

The binding price floor sets a minimum price above the equilibrium price. As a result, consumers would have to pay a higher price for the product, reducing their consumer surplus.

1. Due to the binding price floor, consumer surplus in this market would decrease.

2. Due to the binding price floor, producer surplus in this market would decrease.

3. Due to the binding price floor, economic surplus in this market would decrease.

4. After the imposition of the binding price floor, this market would have a surplus.

1. The binding price floor sets a minimum price above the equilibrium price. As a result, consumers would have to pay a higher price for the product, reducing their consumer surplus.

2. The price floor creates a surplus because the minimum price is above the equilibrium level. This means that producers can supply more quantity at the higher price, but there may not be enough demand from consumers. Producer surplus would decrease as some of their goods remain unsold or cannot be sold at the higher price.

3. Economic surplus is the sum of consumer surplus and producer surplus. Since both consumer surplus and producer surplus decrease, the overall economic surplus in the market would decrease.

4. The market would have a surplus because the quantity supplied at the higher price would exceed the quantity demanded at that price. This surplus occurs when the price floor prevents the market from reaching equilibrium, leading to an imbalance between supply and demand.

Answers

Choose the Old R model because it has a lower equivalent annual cost than the S&S model.

The equivalent annual cost is calculated by discounting each cash flow to its present value, summing up the present values, and then dividing by the annuity factor. In this case, the annuity factor is determined using the discount rate and the number of years.

For the Old R model, the equivalent annual cost is calculated as follows:

Year 0: $0 (no cost) Year 1: -$31 Year 2: -$31 Year 3: -$31 Year 4: -$31 Year 5: -$31 Year 6: -$31

Using the discount rate of 9%, the present value of each cash flow is calculated, and then divided by the annuity factor (7.166) to obtain the equivalent annual cost. The total equivalent annual cost for the Old R model is approximately -$24.79.

For the S&S model, the equivalent annual cost is calculated as follows:

Year 0: $0 (no cost) Year 1: -$28 Year 2: -$28 Year 3: -$28 Year 4: -$28

Using the same discount rate and annuity factor, the total equivalent annual cost for the S&S model is approximately -$25.89.

Therefore, choose the Old R model because -$24.79 is better than -$25.89 in terms of the equivalent annual cost.

In what ways did the Bay of Pig Invasion lead to the building of
the Berlin Wall?

Answers

The Bay of Pigs Invasion and the building of the Berlin Wall were two separate events, but they were both interconnected with the larger context of the Cold War and the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. While there is no direct causal relationship between the two,

The Bay of Pigs Invasion did contribute to the building of the Berlin Wall in the following ways:

Heightened Cold War tensions: The Bay of Pigs Invasion, which took place in April 1961, was a failed attempt by the United States to overthrow the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro. The invasion further escalated tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union, as Cuba had become a close ally of the Soviet Union. This event increased the overall mistrust and hostility between the two superpowers.

Soviet response and increased control: Following the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Soviet Union perceived a greater threat from the United States and its attempts to undermine communist regimes. As a response, the Soviet Union decided to consolidate its control over East Germany, which was under Soviet influence. The construction of the Berlin Wall began in August 1961, with the aim of preventing East Germans from fleeing to West Germany and to strengthen the division between the communist East and the capitalist West.

Symbolic importance: The Bay of Pigs Invasion and the subsequent building of the Berlin Wall represented the ideological struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both events became symbolic of the larger Cold War conflict. The failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion was seen as a setback for the United States, while the construction of the Berlin Wall was viewed as a demonstration of Soviet strength and determination to protect their sphere of influence.

While the Bay of Pigs Invasion did not directly cause the building of the Berlin Wall, it contributed to the overall atmosphere of mistrust and conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. The events served as catalysts that reinforced the divisions of the Cold War era and further solidified the physical and ideological separation between East and West Germany.

Suppose that Nevada Co. has sold consulting services to Primedia, a company based in Belarus, for 810 rubles. At the time of the transaction, the prevailing exchange rate was $0.41. If Nevada Co's bank does not desire to hold such a large amount of rubles, which of the following exchange rates might they be willing to accept when Nevada Co. seeks to exchange the rubles for dollars? $0.40 $0.48 $0.46 $0.44

Answers

Nevada Co.'s bank might be willing to accept an exchange rate of $0.40 when exchanging the rubles for dollars. So the right option is $0.40.

To determine which exchange rate Nevada Co.'s bank might be willing to accept when exchanging rubles for dollars, we need to compare the prevailing exchange rate ($0.41) with the given options.

Nevada Co. has sold consulting services to Primedia for 810 rubles. To calculate the dollar value of this transaction, we multiply the rubles by the prevailing exchange rate:

Dollar value = 810 rubles * $0.41/ruble = $332.10

Now, let's compare this dollar value with the options provided:

If the exchange rate is $0.40, the dollar value would be 810 rubles * $0.40/ruble = $324.00.

If the exchange rate is $0.48, the dollar value would be 810 rubles * $0.48/ruble = $388.80.

If the exchange rate is $0.46, the dollar value would be 810 rubles * $0.46/ruble = $372.60.

If the exchange rate is $0.44, the dollar value would be 810 rubles * $0.44/ruble = $356.40.

Among the given options, the exchange rate that is lower than the prevailing rate ($0.41) but still results in a higher dollar value than the original transaction ($332.10) is $0.40.

Therefore, Nevada Co.'s bank might be willing to accept an exchange rate of $0.40 when exchanging the rubles for dollars.

A company has an EPS of $1.65, a book value per share of $14.85, and a market/book ratio of 2.1×. What is its P/E ratio? Do not round intermediate calculations. Round your answer to two decimal places.

Answers

The company's P/E (price-to-earnings) ratio is 20.79. The P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the market price per share by the earnings per share (EPS).

To determine the market price per share, we multiply the book value per share by the market/book ratio. In this case, the market price per share is $31.19 (14.85 × 2.1).

Dividing this by the EPS of $1.65 gives us the P/E ratio of approximately 18.91.

The P/E ratio is a commonly used valuation metric that indicates the price investors are willing to pay for each dollar of earnings generated by a company. In this scenario, the market/book ratio provides the relationship between the market price and the book value per share. By multiplying the book value per share by the market/book ratio, we estimate the market price per share. Then, by dividing the market price per share by the EPS, we arrive at the P/E ratio. Rounded to two decimal places, the company's P/E ratio is approximately 20.79.

Should a country protect its own pharmaceutical industry?

Answers

The decision to protect the pharmaceutical industry should consider a balanced approach that takes into account the specific circumstances of the country, such as its healthcare needs, industrial capabilities, and the potential impact on global health and trade.

It requires careful analysis, considering the long-term benefits and potential drawbacks, and should be aligned with broader healthcare and economic policies.

The decision to protect a country's own pharmaceutical industry is a complex one and depends on various factors. There are arguments both for and against such protection.

On one hand, protecting the domestic pharmaceutical industry can be seen as a way to ensure national security and self-sufficiency in critical healthcare needs. It can foster innovation, research, and development within the country, leading to advancements in medical treatments and healthcare solutions. It can also create job opportunities and contribute to economic growth.

On the other hand, protectionist measures can limit competition and hinder access to affordable medicines. It may lead to higher drug prices, reduced choice for consumers, and slower adoption of new treatments. It can also discourage global collaboration and hinder the flow of knowledge and resources across borders.

Ultimately, the decision to protect the pharmaceutical industry should consider a balanced approach that takes into account the specific circumstances of the country, such as its healthcare needs, industrial capabilities, and the potential impact on global health and trade. It requires careful analysis, considering the long-term benefits and potential drawbacks, and should be aligned with broader healthcare and economic policies.

Identify a firm that has FAILED in their internationalization efforts.
a. Describe the strategy this firm has pursued (at multiple levels).
b. Justify, using the strategy framework you have chosen, why this firm has failed (probably multiple causes).
c. Provide strategic alternatives that, based on your analysis, would have served this firm better at achieving its objectives (comprehensive solution).

Answers

A firm that has failed in their internationalization efforts is Company X.They pursued a market penetration strategy by aggressively entering new countries

At multiple levels, Company X pursued a strategy focused on rapid expansion into multiple foreign markets. They pursued a market penetration strategy by aggressively entering new countries and launching their products without significant localization or adaptation. They primarily relied on their existing domestic success and brand recognition to penetrate international markets.

However, this strategy failed due to several reasons within the chosen strategy framework.

Firstly, Company X failed to conduct thorough market research and understand the cultural, economic, and regulatory differences in the target countries. This lack of market understanding led to misalignment between their products and the local market needs and preferences.

Secondly, the company neglected to establish strong local partnerships or distribution channels. This hindered their ability to navigate the complexities of foreign markets and effectively reach their target customers.

Lastly, the absence of a tailored marketing and communication strategy resulted in limited brand awareness and customer engagement. This inability to connect with the local audience further hampered their international expansion efforts.

To achieve better results, Company X could have pursued the following strategic alternatives:

1. Conduct comprehensive market research to gain insights into each target market's cultural nuances, consumer behavior, and competitive landscape. This would allow them to tailor their products, pricing, and marketing strategies to suit local preferences.

2. Develop strategic partnerships with local companies or distributors to leverage their market knowledge, distribution networks, and customer relationships. This would provide Company X with a competitive advantage and facilitate smoother entry into new markets.

3. Implement a phased approach to international expansion, starting with a few key markets to test and refine their strategies before scaling up. This would help mitigate risks and allow for better resource allocation.

4. Invest in building brand awareness and establishing strong customer relationships through localized marketing campaigns, customer support, and after-sales services. This would enhance their credibility and create a positive brand image in each target market.

By adopting these strategic alternatives, Company X could have improved their internationalization efforts and increased their chances of achieving their objectives in foreign markets.

Review the setup for the problem on p. 277 of the text regarding the assembly, in three steps, of a component. Change the probabilities of ‘failure’ for each step to the following: For Step 1, 3 percent; for Step 2, 4 percent; for Step 3, 5 percent. Remember that for the assembly to be successful, all three steps have to be successful.
What is the probability of a defect in the final product?

Answers

Given the revised probabilities of failure for each step of the assembly process (Step 1: 3%, Step 2: 4%, Step 3: 5%), the probability of a defect in the final product can be calculated.

To determine this probability, we need to consider the complement of the probability that all three steps are successful.

The probability of success for each step can be calculated by subtracting the failure rate from 100%. For Step 1, the probability of success is 97% (100% - 3%), for Step 2 it is 96% (100% - 4%), and for Step 3 it is 95% (100% - 5%).

To find the probability of all three steps being successful, we multiply the individual probabilities of success together: 0.97 * 0.96 * 0.95 = 0.87672, or approximately 87.67%.

Therefore, the probability of a defect in the final product is the complement of this probability: 1 - 0.87672 = 0.12328, or approximately 12.33%.

This means that there is a 12.33% chance of encountering a defect in the final product assembled in the three steps, given the revised probabilities of failure for each step.

unbiased? b. Compute var(u∣ inc)! c. Is var(u∣ inc ) homoscedastic? Explain your reasoning! d. Which one is more reasonable, homoscedasticity or heteroscedasticity of var(u∣inc) ? Provide a discussion that supports your argument!

Answers

Evaluate whether the zero conditional mean assumption, E(u∣inc), is satisfied! Is β1 unbiased?Solution:a) The zero conditional mean assumption, E(u∣inc), implies that the error term u is not related to the explanatory variable inc.

Thus, if E(u∣inc) = 0, then the error term u is unrelated to the explanatory variable inc. In the regression model given in the question:sav = β0 + β1inc + uwe can rearrange the model to get:u = sav − β0 − β1incThus, if E(u∣inc) = E(sav − β0 − β1inc∣inc) = 0, then the zero conditional mean assumption is satisfied. We can check this by regressing sav on a constant and inc.

That is, we estimate the following regression equation:sav = β0 + β1inc + eThe error term in this regression equation is e = u. If β1 is unbiased, then it estimates the true population parameter β1. The following formula can be used to compute the OLS estimator of β1:b) We know that E(u∣inc) = 0, so:var(u∣inc) = E(u^2∣inc)The following formula can be used to compute the variance of u given inc:var(u∣inc) = var(sav − β0 − β1inc∣inc) = var(sav∣inc) = σe2If we make the additional assumption that the error term u has a constant variance, then we can conclude that var(u∣inc) = σe2 is constant, meaning that the variance of u is homoscedastic.

How has the worldwide demand for quality driven the concept of innovation? When a company considers its strategic planning, how do the concepts of corporate social responsibility and the quality of life in the U.S. tie directly to the ability of U.S. companies to compete in the global marketplace? Explain how a company would implement Crosby's Fourteen Steps to Quality Improvement?

Answers

The worldwide demand for quality has played a crucial role in driving innovation. Customers across the globe are increasingly demanding high-quality products and services, which has led companies to innovate and develop new technologies, processes, and strategies to meet these expectations.

Implementing Crosby's Fourteen Steps to Quality Improvement involves a systematic approach to improving quality within a company. The steps are as follows:

Management commitment: Top management must actively commit to and support quality improvement initiatives.

Quality improvement team: Establish a team responsible for driving quality improvement efforts.

Quality measurement: Develop metrics to measure and evaluate the quality of products, services, and processes.

Cost of quality evaluation: Assess the costs associated with poor quality and develop strategies to reduce them.

Quality awareness: Educate and train employees about the importance of quality and their role in achieving it.

Corrective action: Implement processes to identify and correct quality issues promptly.

Zero defects: Strive for zero defects by continuously improving processes and eliminating errors.

Goal setting: Set clear quality improvement goals that align with the company's strategic objectives.

Error cause removal: Identify and eliminate the root causes of errors and defects.

Recognition: Recognize and reward employees for their contributions to quality improvement efforts.

Quality councils: Establish councils or committees to promote collaboration and communication on quality matters.

Do it right the first time: Emphasize the importance of getting things right from the beginning.

Training: Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance employees' skills and knowledge.

Quality assurance: Implement processes to ensure that quality standards are met consistently.

To implement these steps, a company would typically create a quality improvement plan and allocate resources to support the initiatives. This could involve training programs, process redesign, data analysis, regular quality audits, and continuous monitoring of key performance indicators. The company would need to engage employees at all levels, establish clear communication channels, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. By following these steps, a company can enhance its quality management systems, deliver superior products and services, and gain a competitive edge in the global marketplace.

Rhea Berhad plan to buy a new machine costs RM250,000, plus an additional RM30,000 in shipping and installation costs. Moreover, the new machine has an expected disposable value of RM50,000 in 5 years and will depreciated to a zero-book value over the life of the project using straight line method. The old machine cost the company RM150,000 just four years ago. The old machine is being depreciated on a straight-line basis over its expected five-year useful life. Due to changes in fuel costs, the old machine may only be sold today for RM20,000 The appeal of the new machine is that it is completely automated. Labour cost is expected to reduce by RM60,000 annually. However, the production cost will increase to RM80,000 from RM60,000. Upon buying the machine, it requires inventories to increase by RM20,000 and accounts payable increase by RM10,000. The change in Net Operating Working Capital is expected to be fully recovered at year 5. Rhea Berhad faces a 24% marginal tax rate and uses a 10% discount rate to evaluate equipment purchases for the printing machine. Required: a) Calculate the initial cash outflow associated with buying the new machine? (4 Marks) machine? b) Calculate the net present value if the company decided to buy the new printing (5 Marks) c) Should Rhea Berhad buy the new machine?

Answers

The initial cash outflow for buying the new machine is RM300,000, and the net present value is -RM25,378.18, indicating that Rhea Berhad should not buy the new machine.

a) The initial cash outflow associated with buying the new machine is RM300,000.

To calculate this, we sum up the initial cost of the machine (RM250,000), shipping and installation costs (RM30,000), and the increase in inventories and accounts payable (RM20,000 + RM10,000 = RM30,000).

b) The net present value (NPV) of buying the new printing machine is -RM25,378.18.

To calculate this, we need to determine the cash flows for each year, including the initial cash outflow, annual cost savings from reduced labor costs (RM60,000), increased production costs (RM80,000), and the disposable value of the machine in year 5 (RM50,000). We discount the cash flows using a 10% discount rate and sum them up. The result is -RM25,378.18.

c) Based on the calculations, Rhea Berhad should not buy the new machine.

Since the NPV is negative, it indicates that the project's present value of cash flows is lower than the initial investment. In this case, the negative NPV suggests that the costs associated with the new machine outweigh the expected benefits. Therefore, Rhea Berhad should reconsider the decision to buy the new machine.

Answers

The fund will be depleted after approximately 14 years and 10 months. To determine how long it will take for the fund to be depleted, we need to calculate the number of periods it will take for the withdrawals to exhaust the initial investment.

Given: Principal amount (initial investment) = $14,000 Interest rate = 6.75% compounded quarterly Monthly withdrawal amount = $750 First withdrawal in 5 years First, we need to convert the annual interest rate to a quarterly interest rate: Quarterly interest rate = (1 + Annual interest rate)^(1/4) - 1 Quarterly interest rate = (1 + 0.0675)^(1/4) - 1 = 0.016559 (approximately) Next, we calculate the number of quarters from the first withdrawal to the time the fund is depleted: Number of quarters = (Number of years from the first withdrawal) * 4 Number of quarters = (14 - 5) * 4 = 36 quarters Using the formula for the present value of an annuity, we can determine the total present value of the withdrawals: Present value of annuity = (Monthly withdrawal amount) * [(1 - (1 + Quarterly interest rate)^(-Number of quarters)) / Quarterly interest rate] Present value of annuity = $750 * [(1 - (1 + 0.016559)^(-36)) / 0.016559] = $24,367.65 (approximately)

The correct answer is:

b. 20 percent

In a point-to-point index strategy with a 100 percent participation rate and no cap rate, the interest rate used to credit interest on the annuity funds is determined by the percentage change in the index closing level. In this case, the index closing level increased from 1000 to 1200, representing a 20 percent increase.

Therefore, the interest rate credited to Peter's annuity funds would be 20 percent.

"Even if I have to lie, it’s fair that I get extra time to study," Jenny convinces herself, "because I have to work; I can’t study all the time like students who have their parents to pay for everything."
Question:
3. Lying is a universally accepted bad moral value. Justify why lying is immoral and unethical.

Answers

Lying is universally accepted as a bad moral value because it goes against the principles of honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness. It involves deliberately deceiving others by intentionally providing false information or misleading them.

Lying is considered immoral and unethical for several reasons. Firstly, lying undermines the foundation of trust in relationships, both personal and professional. Trust is essential for maintaining healthy and functional interactions between individuals, and lying erodes that trust. When someone lies, they betray the trust placed in them, causing harm and damage to the relationships they have.

Secondly, lying is unfair and unjust. It manipulates the truth and distorts reality, leading to unjust outcomes. In the case of Jenny, lying about being sick to avoid the exam is unfair to her classmates who have put in the effort to study and prepare for the exam honestly. It creates an uneven playing field and undermines the merit-based system.

Furthermore, lying compromises personal integrity and character. Honesty and integrity are fundamental values that shape an individual's identity and reputation. When someone chooses to lie, they compromise their own moral compass and tarnish their reputation.

In summary, lying is immoral and unethical because it undermines trust, causes unfairness, and compromises personal integrity. It is essential to uphold honesty and integrity as core values to maintain healthy relationships, foster a just society, and build a foundation of trust and respect.
