10 things you'll bring stranded on a boat and why
1. WATER SUPPLY
This is step zero. Honestly, it’s so obvious that we shouldn’t be taking the time to type these words. But we’re going to anyway. ALWAYS HAVE AN EMERGENCY SUPPLY OF WATER ON BOARD. You never know when an emergency may come up, and if being stranded isn’t an emergency, we don’t know what is (P.S. You can’t drink the salt water).
An unwelcome and expensive citation is what awaits the boater who forgets to check the expiration dates on his or her flares. Photo courtesy of Orion
Having a flare gun onboard can make you or break you during an emergency situation—not to mention, it can also prevent you from receiving a citation. Photo Courtesy: Orion
2. FLARE GUN
Do you remember that scene from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia when Charlie shoots himself with a flare gun? Yeah, don’t do that. Using a flare gun can be the difference between life and death. This flag-down technique is helpful during both night and day and can catch someone's attention up to 25 miles away. Just make sure you actually use it outdoors and point it upwards, unlike Charlie.
3. VHF MARINE RADIO
No, this one’s not for the tunes. You’ll use this radio for something a little different. You know, to arrange a rescue? If you’re not too far away from civilization, someone will hear your distress call and contact authorities. Even though it would be cooler to be rescued by a booze cruise, take what you can get. Trust us. Oh, and you might want to learn how to use your VHF radio just in case.
In most boating situations—including emergency situations—the VHF radio is your fastest, most reliable form of communications.
4. A FRIEND
You’re bound to lose your mind without somebody there to keep you company. A trusty companion will help keep your mind occupied while you try and find your salvation—even if it’s just a volleyball with a smiling handprint on it, a la Tom Hanks in Castaway.
5. A STRING QUARTET
Anybody who’s seen the movie Titanic knows that upon learning that their ship was sinking, passengers weren’t exactly pleased. To try and combat the ensuing panic, a Victorian string quartet stayed on deck and played their upbeat tunes right until the boat went under. We’re not saying everyone’s got a group of tuxedo-clad men on standby waiting to play some calming Beethoven, but if there’s one aboard your ship, it couldn’t hurt.
6. A FISHING POLE
Rather than withering in anguish and hunger for days on end (and eventually resorting to cannibalism and eating your shipmate), we suggest a more ethically sound alternative: fishing! Hopefully you’ve got your rods and lures stowed away if you’re a seasoned fisherman, but otherwise, you might have to fashion your own spear from scattered debris and miscellaneous materials. Don’t complain, everyone else in the movies has had to do the same exact thing. Just work on that aim and before you know it: sashimi time!
If you're stranded out in open waters, you better hope that the fish are biting!
7. SPEAKERS
If your boat isn’t equipped with marine stereo speakers (or a string quartet), you bought the wrong boat—but that’s a rant for another time. While you’re sipping on your spare water waiting for a flyby to wave down, put on some Zac Brown Band and kick back. It’ll make the time pass by faster and let you practice your air banjo skills. Also, if the music is coming from an FM radio station, you’re close to land! If it’s from an MP3 device, you’re out of luck.
8. DECK OF CARDS
After those initial stages of panic and desperation, you’re gonna get bored—really, really bored. If you’re trying to make the most of your marooned experience, having a deck of cards to pass the time is a great investment. A game of charades will get old after a while, and you’ll want to make sure to keep the entertainment going so you and your shipmate don’t end up at each other’s throats. Go fish, anyone?
When it comes to having the right survival items onboard, it's best to prepare for the worst—better safe than sorry, right?
9. DIARY
Let’s be honest: help may take a while. This means it’s just you and your thoughts—so, document them! Once you’re rescued, take a look at what you wrote. You may be shocked at its darkness or lack of sense, but it will be a story of pure perseverance and survival.
10. POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Try as best you can to turn your Open Water nightmare into more of a Gilligan’s Island splash bash! Mindset is everything in these types of dire situations, and if you’re planning on making it out alive, you better stay optimistic. Keep your head in the game and try not to lose sight of your sanity. Help is on the way!

In paragraph 1 of Plymouth Plantation, which line best describes the author's attitude toward the "proud and very profane" young man's death?
"he would alway be contemning the poor people in their sickness and cursing them daily with grievous execrations"
"he hoped to help to cast half of them overboard before they came to their journey's end"
"But it pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner"
"Thus his curses light on his own head, and it was an astonishment to all his fellows for they noted it to be the just hand of God upon him."
The line in paragraph 1 of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford, that best describes his attitude toward the "proud and very profane" young man's death is option C, where he wrote that "God was pleased to smite the young man with a grievous disease."
This line captured Bradford's attitude toward the young man when he became ill and died as a result.
This shows that the author's attitude is not captured by options A and B, which developed the story about the young man, nor by option D, which concluded it.
Thus, the correct option that shows the author's attitude is Option C.

Explanation:
Well, the journey I still remember very vividly is the one I took to Nha Trang, a coastal resort city in southern Vietnam, where my sister lives with her husband. It was probably early February 2014 when I got a call from my brother-in-law that my sister has given birth to a beautiful baby girl. We were expecting the baby a few days later but that was indeed a very good news as this was the first baby in our family and both the mother and child were doing fine as my brother-in-law informed me.
I immediately returned home from my university to give this wonderful and happy news to my parents. My parents were quite excited and they planned to visit the newborn and my sister on the following day. It was more than 10 hours’ journey and we started in the early morning next day.
We went to the local train station and luckily got three first-class seats on the train. I am very fond of train journey as it gives me the freedom to walk in different compartments of the train, read books pleasantly, enjoy the meal in the train cafeteria, buy books and magazines, use the lavatory if needed and enjoy the scenic beauty of the countryside, unlike the monotonous long bus journey. The journey was a very pleasant one and I finished a book that I took with me. Besides, I read two magazines and a daily newspaper that I bought from the station. I specifically remember the journey because my parents were with me and they also enjoyed being out of home after a long. The longing and waiting to see the new baby also made it a pleasant journey and a memorable one. My mother told me some stories of my childhood that she never shared with me before and my father told about his first experience on a train and that was so funny that we laughed quite loudly!
I am Benjemin and I would like to tell you about my journey to Australia . I was very excited for the journey as I have never seen or been to Australia.
We packed our bags with dress and food and water and left to the airport for the flight. Well, unfortunately, our flight to Australia was delayed . I don't know why but I became more happy as now , I can wander in the airport lodge freely with the reason that I have my flight late. I was so energetic that I felt to dance in the airport. But, the clerk in the desk told us that we can't have a room in the airport lodge as two Australia planes have been delayed, so many passengers were left, therefore, they were given the room. That's when it took a turn for the worse.
We asked whether we can go to our cousin's house for stay, but they replied that flight passengers cannot go back after they have given their boarding pass. My father became tensed and called our cousins. They rushed to the airport. Still, the management did not allow.
Understanding that the reason of the management was not appropriate, my uncle calle the police. Later the police informed happily that it was a test to prove that the passengers were real and not any criminals. Just after, the CEO appeared and told us that the flight was already waiting for us .
We heaved a sigh of relief and entered the plane. We slept, ate food and reached Australia and had a happy vacation there.
Anyways, I won't forget this journey because of the presence of the police and their way of talking. That might have been the best vacation I will ever have.
Thank you...
