“Casey at the Bat”
by Ernest Lawrence Thayer

A Ballad of the Republic, Sung in the Year 1888

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day;
The score stood four to two with but one inning more to play.
And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought if only Casey could but get a whack at that—
We’d put up even money now with Casey at the bat.

But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Casey’s getting to the bat.

But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,
And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and men saw what had occurred,
There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third.

Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat,
For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.

There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile on Casey’s face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt ‘twas Casey at the bat.

Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance gleamed in Casey’s eye, a sneer curled Casey’s lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped—
“That ain’t my style,” said Casey. “Strike one,” the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.
“Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted some one on the stand;
And it’s likely they’d have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Casey’s visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew;
But Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said, “Strike two.”

“Fraud!” cried the maddened thousands, and echo answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Casey wouldn’t let that ball go by again.

The sneer is gone from Casey’s lip, his teeth are clinched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate.
And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

Read the following excerpt from “The Gift of the Magi” and answer the question.

For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone.

But she hugged them to her bosom, and at length she was able to look up with dim eyes and a smile and say: "My hair grows so fast, Jim! And them Della leaped up like a little singed cat and cried, "Oh, oh!" Jim had not yet seen his beautiful present. She held it out to him eagerly upon her open palm. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a reflection of her bright and ardent spirit."Isn't it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You'll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it."

Instead of obeying, Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled."Della," said he, "let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em a while. They're too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on."

The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

What type of irony is most evident in the excerpt above?

Dramatic irony

Situational irony

Verbal irony

None of the above

Answers

The type of irony is most evident in the excerpt above is, Situational irony

Because Situational irony occurs when a story is unexpected. An illustration might be Jim seeing Della's short hair when he gets home from work. He didn't anticipate Della selling her hair, as shown by the fact that he bought hair combs for her. Della's circumstance is paradoxical because she desired a set of tortoise shell combs but didn't anticipate getting them as a present.

Another instance of situational irony is when Jim gets his watch fob from Della unexpectedly, even though Della was unaware that he had sold it. When Jim tells Della, "Let's put our Christmas presents away and keep 'em for a bit," Henry introduces a twist to the tale. They are too good to utilize right now. I earned the cash to purchase your combs by selling the watch.

Let's say you put on the chops immediately. Jim is content to put the event behind him and enjoy supper rather than get irritated over the gifts they can't use. Henry emphasizes in the final sentence of the article that Jim and Della's sacrifices for one another were more priceless than the presents themselves.

Moving coastal cities further inland would be close to impossible (considering the millions that live there), but encouraging a move would be helpful.

Subject :  A car drive very close to someone on a bicycle

Dear Editor,

I am a reader of your prestigious news paper, The Navi Mumbai Times. Your column stories are very informative and important. I would like to draw attention of everyone through your newspaper about the incident that happened yesterday.

Yesterday, when I was coming from market to my home, I saw  car driver drove very close to someone on a bicycle. It happened near Mahatma Circle in Sector 90. I was on my scooty and everyone were following the lane. This car driver purposefully drove very close to the bicycle. The cyclist was near the pedestrian road and was not interfering in between. The car knock off the cyclist. It later also created traffic because people stopped to help the person.

Strict actions should be taken against them. CCTV cameras should be installed in this area too. Police should find out who was the driver of the car who was so irresponsible. A separate roas at the side near pedestrian should be made for cyclist.

I hope you'll show interest into ths matter.

Thanking you

Yours faithfully

The Biblical Greek is also known as Koine Greek. It has a simplified grammar, and the sentence construction as well.
