The slaves at Sweet Home were well aware of their place in the world and had opinions about the world around them. Despite this, their master, Mr. Garner, listened to and respected their opinion.
He believed their words had merit, and he understood their feelings were serious. This showed that he did not strive to dominate them and deprive them of their authority. However, this did not last long, as schoolteacher came and changed their lives forever. He taught them to be submissive, and to only be Sweet Home men at Sweet Home.
This scared the slaves, as it meant they could not escape their fate and could not be anything more than a slave. Mr Garner’s respect for his slaves, however, showed that they still had the power to think and voice their opinion, and it was only through schoolteacher’s influence that this was taken away from them.
