Science Mysteries: Why Do People Yawn?

Science has given humans many amazing devices and useful bits of knowledge. We know so much about our bodies and how to stay healthy, for example. We also know how to make machines and devices that make life easy for us. Scientists dedicate their lives to knowledge, but even with a lifetime commitment, sometimes scientists fail to find all the answers. One mystery that still remains unsolved is why we yawn—what makes us yawn and what purpose it serves.

Recent studies suggest that we yawn when we get tired as a way to encourage our brains. The theory is that yawning helps cool the brain, allowing it to work more efficiently. According to WebMD's article about these studies, when you yawn, your jaw muscles get stretched, increasing blood flow to your neck, face, and head. Also a deep breath during the yawn forces spinal fluid and blood down from the brain. The cool air then cools down these fluids.

Other scientists believe, however, that yawning is a form of communication. This theory attempts to explain why yawning seems to spread from person to person. This kind of behavior is called "contagious yawning" and carries with it a possible social message. Scientists are not yet sure what exactly the message is, but they believe people who have more social empathy are more likely to start yawning when they see someone else yawning.

Scientists will continue to investigate the mystery of the yawn. Is it a leftover behavior from before humans had language? Was it a "Hey, I'm sleepy. Let's go to sleep" message? Or is it really just a way to keep our brains cool? While this behavior still is largely a mystery, one thing is certain: you are probably fighting the urge to yawn right about now.

Read this sentence from the conclusion:

While this behavior still is largely a mystery, one thing is certain: you are probably fighting the urge to yawn right about now.

Answer 1

Answer:

Contagious yawning, or the reflexive tendency to yawn following the detection of yawning in others, is well-documented among humans and a growing number of social vertebrates.

Explanation:

Mirror neurons in the brain are thought to be the mechanism behind contagious yawning. These neurons match our actions to the people around us. So if you see other people yawn, chances are you're compelled to become a yawner, too, even if you aren't bored or tired

In stanza 4 of "The Poison Tree," the narrator feels happy because his foe fell into his trap. Therefore, the narrator's happiness comes from the fact that his enemy was tricked into stealing the apple and then died as a result.

Book divergent!!! Why do you think the author wrote this story? What message is the author trying to convey to the readers?

PLS ANSWER ASAP!!

Answers

One possible reason why the author wrote "Divergent" is to explore the themes of identity, conformity, and individuality. The story follows the protagonist, Beatrice "Tris" Prior, who discovers she is Divergent, meaning she possesses qualities from multiple factions. In this society that values conformity, being Divergent is considered dangerous and threatens the established order.

Through Tris's journey, the author may be attempting to convey the importance of embracing one's unique identity and resisting societal pressures to conform. Tris challenges the faction system and questions its limitations and inherent flaws. Her actions highlight the value of individuality and the potential dangers of extreme categorization and rigid social structures.

The book also touches upon themes of power, control, and the abuse of authority. The faction system, controlled by the ruling class, imposes strict rules and limitations on its members. This can be seen as a critique of oppressive systems that stifle personal freedom and suppress dissent.

Furthermore, "Divergent" explores the concept of human nature and the complexities of morality. It raises questions about the nature of good and evil and how individuals navigate moral choices within a flawed society.

Overall, the author may have written "Divergent" to provoke reflection and encourage readers to question societal norms, embrace their individuality, and challenge oppressive systems. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of conformity and the importance of staying true to oneself in the face of societal pressures.

By mentioning the French Revolution, the author demonstrates the concept of how historical events and their interpretations can change as they are studied and examined through different sources. This example emphasizes the importance of multiple perspectives and the evolution of understanding through the study of history.

The inclusion of "the Book" as an analogy for religious texts, does suggest drawing upon culture, but it does not necessarily reference history or other works outside the text itself. Claim: The percentage of older adults living alone is higher in the United States than in other countries."

Reasoning

The evidence provided demonstrates that the percentage of older adults living alone is higher in the United States compared to other countries. 27% of American adults aged 60 and older live alone, while the average for the 130 countries and territories studied is 16%. This significant difference suggests that there are unique factors  that contribute to a higher prevalence of older adults living alone in the United States. The cultural shift towards individualism in American society could explain this evidence since it promotes independence and self-reliance. Additionally, changing family structures, such as smaller households and a decrease in multi-generational living arrangements, may contribute to a higher likelihood of older adults living alone. Economic factors like higher rates of economic independence and social safety nets could also play a role, providing older adults in the United States with the means and opportunities to live independently. Overall, the evidence indicates that the United States leads in terms of the percentage of older adults living alone. It suggests that societal, cultural, and economic factors unique to the country contribute to this trend.
