What happens in the poem?The sad poem "The Conversion" by J. Neil C. Garcia is about a homosexual speaker, who perhaps does not identify as male. The speaker is grabbed and dragged by his father and uncles into a drum filled with water. He is then repeated drowned until he "chooses" to be a man.
Notice how the speaker is "converted" - through extreme violence. His true self is drowned, killed, and only the persona, the façade remains. The drum is thus a symbol of that violence, of the prejudice and difficulty to accept what is different.
Now, let's suppose the "conversion" had not taken place in that awful drum. Let's suppose they had talked to the speaker. Instead of living the life of lies he lives now, he might have stayed true to himself and his sexuality. He might have been happier. Now, after so much violence, he has also become a violent men. He beats his wife and drinks, makes children to prove he is a man.
