When thinking about a visit to the zoo, most people imagine a fun day spent outdoors observing exotic animals. However, a visit to the zoo means much more. Zoo patrons support an organization that benefits both animals and people in countless ways. Here are just a few.

Introduction to “A Case Against Zoos”

Most people think of a visit to the zoo as a harmless, fun way to spend the day. Observing amazing animals in their natural habitat is a fantastic learning experience. But are zoos a fantastic place for the animals that live there? Take a closer look at the realities of zoo life and you may think twice about your next visit.

Both authors believe that visiting a zoo is the best way to see exotic animals in their natural habitat.

The author of the first excerpt believes that zoos benefit animals, while the author of the second excerpt questions if this is true.

Both authors view a visit to the zoo as a way to learn about animals.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

1) "The first author feels that visiting the zoo is fun, but the second author wonders if life in a zoo is fun for the animals."

2) "The author of the first excerpt believes that zoos benefit animals, while the author of the second excerpt questions if this is true."

Explanation:

The first response accurately captures the contrasting viewpoints of the authors. The first author describes a visit to the zoo as a fun day outdoors, while the second author raises concerns about the well-being of animals in zoos.

The second response is incorrect because neither author suggests that visiting a zoo is the best way to see exotic animals in their natural habitat. In fact, the second author questions the suitability of zoo environments for animals.

The third response is correct. The first author highlights the benefits of zoos for both animals and people, indicating a belief in the positive impact of zoos. In contrast, the second author questions the notion that zoos are beneficial for animals.

The fourth response is incorrect because although both authors acknowledge the potential for learning through a visit to the zoo, it does not represent the main focus or viewpoint of either author.

Hope this helps!

Answer 2

Answer:

The two correct responses are:

The first author feels that visiting the zoo is fun, but the second author wonders if life in a zoo is fun for the animals. The author of the first excerpt believes that zoos benefit animals, while the author of the second excerpt questions if this is true.

Explanation:

The first author's viewpoint is positive and emphasizes the benefits of zoos for both animals and people. The second author's viewpoint is critical and questions whether zoos are good for the animals that live there. Therefore, the first response is incorrect.

The second response is also incorrect because neither author suggests that visiting the zoo is the best way to see animals in their natural habitat. In fact, the second author questions whether zoos provide a natural habitat for animals at all.

The third response accurately represents the viewpoints of both authors. The first author believes that zoos benefit animals, while the second author questions this assumption.

The fourth response is incorrect because the second author does not view a visit to the zoo as a way to learn about animals. Instead, they argue that zoos do not provide a realistic or natural environment for animals and may actually be harmful to their well-being.

Zoos and Education
The more we learn about animals, the more we can do to protect them. Zoos provide tours, seminars, and exhibits to teach the public about animal habitats and how animal behavior is affected by where the animal lives. Visitors discover how animals interact and the role animals play in their environment. This helps us better understand why biodiversity, or a variety of life, is necessary for the health of our planet.

Read the paragraph from a student’s narrative.

One day Mateo noticed a chrysalis hanging from a bush in his backyard. The chrysalis was unlike any he had seen before. It was a brilliant blue with golden dots all over it. Mateo thought that this chrysalis must hold something very special, so he checked it day after day. When the butterfly emerged, it was the same brilliant blue as the chrysalis with wings covered by golden dots. Mateo ran in the house to tell his mother about the unusual butterfly. His mother did not believe him. She said, “Mateo, there is no such butterfly. You’re just imagining things, as always.” Discouraged, Mateo wandered back outside. The brilliant blue butterfly landed on Mateo’s shoulder and whispered in his ear, “Mateo, you are right. I am special. Make a wish and I will grant it.” Mateo thought about it, and then he wished for a new baseball mitt. He had grown quite a bit in the last year, and he could barely fit his hand in his old mitt. With a flap of its wings, the butterfly granted Mateo’s wish. When Mateo told his mother about the wish and showed her the new baseball mitt, she still did not believe him. This pattern repeated as the butterfly produced a new bat and ball to go with the mitt. Mateo’s mother just wouldn’t believe him. At that point, the butterfly told Mateo that he would grant him one more wish.

Question

Which conclusion should the writer add that best follows the events in the story?
Responses

A. Mateo looked at the butterfly and said, “You’ve already given me so much. I really don’t need another wish.”

B. Mateo thought for a bit, then said, “I’d like to be an adult so that I can do whatever I’d like.”

C. Tossing up his new ball and catching it with his new mitt, Mateo said, “I’d like a new baseball cap.”

D. After careful consideration, Mateo said, “I wish my mother would believe me.”

Answers

Answer:

The best conclusion that follows the events in the story is:

D. After careful consideration, Mateo said, “I wish my mother would believe me.”

Explanation:

The conclusion "D. After careful consideration, Mateo said, 'I wish my mother would believe me'" is the most fitting because it addresses the ongoing conflict and theme of disbelief between Mateo and his mother throughout the narrative. Despite the butterfly granting Mateo's wishes and providing tangible evidence of their existence, Mateo's mother continues to dismiss his claims, refusing to believe him.

By expressing his desire for his mother to believe him, Mateo shows his longing for validation and understanding from someone he cares about. It highlights the emotional impact of his mother's skepticism on Mateo and his need for her support and acknowledgement.

This conclusion also adds depth to the story as it explores the underlying relationship between Mateo and his mother, emphasizing the importance of trust, belief, and communication within a family. It leaves room for further development of their dynamic and the potential resolution of their strained relationship.

Overall, this conclusion connects with the central theme of the story, which revolves around Mateo's experiences with the extraordinary butterfly and his struggle to gain his mother's belief.

Answer:

The best conclusion that the writer should add that follows the events in the story is D. After careful consideration, Mateo said, “I wish my mother would believe me.”

Explanation:

This conclusion is the best because it resolves the main conflict of the story, which is Mateo's mother not believing him about the butterfly and its magic. It also shows that Mateo values his relationship with his mother more than material things, and that he wants to share his wonder and joy with her. It also leaves room for the reader to imagine what happens next, such as how the mother reacts to the wish and whether she sees the butterfly for herself.

The other conclusions are not as good because they do not address the main conflict of the story, or they introduce new problems or unrealistic outcomes. For example:

- A. Mateo looked at the butterfly and said, “You’ve already given me so much. I really don’t need another wish.” This conclusion is too passive and does not show any growth or change in Mateo's character. It also wastes the opportunity to use the last wish for something meaningful or important.

- B. Mateo thought for a bit, then said, “I’d like to be an adult so that I can do whatever I’d like.” This conclusion is too drastic and unrealistic. It also contradicts Mateo's character, who seems to enjoy being a child and playing baseball. It also creates a new problem of how Mateo would cope with being an adult without any preparation or guidance.

- C. Tossing up his new ball and catching it with his new mitt, Mateo said, “I’d like a new baseball cap.” This conclusion is too trivial and repetitive. It does not show any creativity or originality in Mateo's wish. It also does not address the main conflict of the story or show any emotional connection between Mateo and his mother.

excerpt from “Background on Judge Sonia Sotomayor” The White House Office of the Press Secretary

Judge Sonia Sotomayor has lived the American dream. Born to a Puerto Rican family, she grew up in a public housing project in the South Bronx. Her parents moved to New York during World War II – her mother served in the Women’s Auxiliary Corps during the war. Her father, a factory worker with a third-grade education, died when Sotomayor was nine years old. Her mother, a nurse, then raised Sotomayor and her younger brother, Juan, now a physician in Syracuse. After her father’s death, Sotomayor turned to books for solace, and it was her newfound love of Nancy Drew that inspired a love of reading and learning, a path that ultimately led her to the law.

Most importantly, at an early age, her mother instilled in Sotomayor and her brother a belief in the power of education. Driven by an indefatigable work ethic, and rising to the challenge of managing a diagnosis of juvenile diabetes, Sotomayor excelled in school. Sotomayor graduated as valedictorian of her class at Blessed Sacrament and at Cardinal Spellman High School in New York. She first heard about the Ivy League from her high school debate coach, Ken Moy, who attended Princeton University, and she soon followed in his footsteps after winning a scholarship.

At Princeton, she continued to excel, graduating summa come laude, and Phi Beta Kappa. She was a co-recipient of the M. Taylor Pyne Prize, the highest honor Princeton awards to an undergraduate. At Yale Law School, Judge Sotomayor served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal and as managing editor of the Yale Studies in World Public Order. One of Sotomayor’s former Yale Law School classmates, Robert Klonoff (now Dean of Lewis & Clark Law School), remembers her intellectual toughness from law school: "She would stand up for herself and not be intimidated by anyone." Why the Cat Always Lands on Its Feet

A gentle magician was traveling in a forest. He’d been traveling forever, it seemed. So when he spotted a tree with gnarled roots, he had to lie down among them to rest. He had just snuggled in and closed his weary eyes when a great serpent slithered out of a thicket. Had the magician noticed the snake in the undergrowth, he would have turned it into a harmless stick.

When the snake saw the sleeping man at the foot of the tree, it coiled in anger. “I will kill him!” it hissed. The snake recalled that this was the very man who had surprised it sometime earlier, just when the snake was about to dine on a tabby cat for breakfast. “Flee for your life!” the magician had cried, and the cat had scrambled up a tree just in time.

The serpent slithered closer now. It hissed its war cry as it remembered the magician’s meddling. “You will be my breakfast,” the deadly troublemaker spat, its forked tongue testing the air for a sniff of its sleeping quarry. “And when I swallow you down, you will be sorry you ever interfered.”

Now, it just so happened that the same breakfast cat had noticed the conflict from the branches high above the sleeping magician. “Arrrr,” she snarled, her little body quivering in fright when she heard the serpent’s hiss. She was slight compared to the enormous serpent. But as she watched the evil one glide toward the man, the memory of the magician’s kindness to her transformed her fear to anger. That snake would pay for preying on helpless victims! The tabby sprang for the coiled serpent like a bolt of striped lightning!
How are the cat and magician alike?

The correct response is:

D) They both are thankful for the kindness that has been shown to them.

Explanation:

The magician is sleeping at the foot of a tree, while the cat is watching from the branches above. The serpent is seeking revenge against the magician for interfering earlier, and plans to kill him. The cat, remembering the magician's kindness to her, decides to attack the serpent to protect the sleeping magician. Therefore, the correct response is that both the cat and the magician are in danger from the serpent.

The word PEAKED is most nearly the opposite in meaning to
A. TIRED
B. ARROGANT
C. POINTY
D. RUDDY

Answers

Answer:

D. Ruddy

Explanation:

The word "peaked" typically describes someone or something that appears pale, sickly, or weak. It is often used to describe a person's physical appearance when they are not feeling well or are lacking vitality.

On the other hand, the word "ruddy" refers to having a healthy, reddish complexion. It is often associated with a robust and healthy appearance. When someone has a ruddy complexion, their skin has a reddish or rosy tone, usually due to good blood circulation and overall health.

Therefore, "ruddy" is considered the opposite of "peaked" because it conveys a completely different physical appearance. While "peaked" suggests a weak or sickly appearance, "ruddy" suggests a healthy and vibrant appearance.

Hope this helps!

The word "peaked" means having a pale and drawn appearance due to illness or exhaustion. The word that is most nearly the opposite in meaning to "peaked" would be "ruddy", which means having a healthy red color. Therefore, the answer is D. RUDDY.

Answers

Answer:

The best sentence to add to the end of the paragraph to clearly state what the paper will be about is

If you follow these steps, learning to ride a bike can be easy and enjoyable.

Explanation:

This sentence introduces the main idea of the paper, which is to provide some steps or tips for learning to ride a bike. It also connects to the previous sentence, which states that learning to ride a bike doesn't have to be scary or frustrating. The other sentences are either too specific, too general, or irrelevant for the purpose of the introduction.

Answer: In order to clearly state what the paper will be about, the student should add the following sentence to the end of the paragraph:

If you follow these steps, learning to ride a bike can be easy and enjoyable.

Explanation:

Normally, ending of a paragraph should be a one-line summary of the particular paragraph. It will be  purely based on the content of the paragraph and that will be preferably an optimistic ending line.

When we consider the given options, the one which fulfils the above criteria is option c. Even though other options are related to the context, they do not have a positive conclusive nature to include as an ending sentence.

So, in that aspect, ' If you follow these steps, learning to ride a bike can be easy and enjoyable.' well suits as an ending sentence for this particular paragraph.
