The central theme of Maus is Guilt. Even though survival is a major theme, The Complete Maus exposes how Holocaust survivors deal with their severe psychological wounds. Many war survivors battled melancholy and "survivor's guilt," which was a heavy burden to bear.
Spiegelman depicts the Nazis as cats and the Jews as mice in "Maus." He claimed that Hitler's ideology of extermination and his comparisons to Jews as vermin made the mouse metaphor suitable. His Jewish parents' experience of surviving the Holocaust in Poland is chronicled in the book.
The conflicts that Maus created during the entire book are not completely resolved by the book's conclusion. Having just completed telling Art about his reunion with Anja after both of them made it out of Auschwitz, Art is seated next to his ailing father.
