Read the speech "Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True" and consider the advertisement "The Opportunity of a Lifetime." Then, answer the question.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

21 I. Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow it by saying true or false (1 pt. each)
Culture is conceived partially in the traditional anthropological sense as involving a total way of life. The total way of life, however, does not necessarily mean simply a set of distinct everyday customs, although it may include these. Rather, it refers to a unique historical group experience. Culture is in essence a system of encoding such experience into a set of symbolic patterns. It does not matter how different the elements of one culture are from another culture. A distinct culture is a manifestation of a group's distinct historical experience. Its product is a sense of unique people hood. The emphasis on culture as the point of departure for our understanding of the nature of ethnicity is not intended to mean that members of an ethnic group must always share one and the same culture to the exclusion of any other. Rather, it is intended to mean that persons who include themselves in an ethnicity would have a relation to a group who either now or at some point in the past has shared a unique culture.
1. According to the writer, a total way of life does not include everyday customs. 2. The writer used the expression "...such experience..." to mean a set of distinct everyday customs.

Although it is occasionally seen as the women’s-only form of exercise, yoga is for everyone. And men, especially those who don’t do much aerobic exercise, and others who spend a lot of time hunched over staring at screens, tend to need it more than anyone else.

Yoga provides not just the physical workout but also a mental and spiritual lift. “Some people have a out-of-date image of yoga,” says Joe Cowan, an yoga instructor from Peterborough. “The modern reality, however, is very different.”

Answers

This question requires us to find four grammatical mistakes in the passage, and all of them seem to be related to the use of articles, as seen below.

the women's-only form of exercise - a women's-only form of exercisethe physical workout - a physical workouta out-of-date - an out-of-datean yoga instructor - a yoga instructor

The correct use of articles

In the English language we have two types of articles:

Definite article "the": Used before singular and plural nouns to refer to something specific.Indefinite articles "a" and "an": Used before singular nouns to refer to something not specific.

To have an idea of the difference between the two types of articles, compare the sentences below:

I have adopted a cat. - "A cat" means I have adopted a cat that is not specific, one that I have never mentioned before.I have adopted the cat. "The cat" indicates that this is a specific cat, one that I have mentioned before and that I already had the intention of adopting.

Having that explanation in mind, we can now analyze each mistake found in the passage:

There is no reason to use "the" here. We are not talking about a specific "women's-only form of exercise."The same applies to "the" as used in this sentence. There is not specific workout that yoga provides. We should use "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound. We should use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound.

When used effectively, foreshadowing is a great tool for building dramatic tension and suspense for readers. It may create emotional anticipations for character actions and/or plot developments. This can increase a reader's appreciation of a literary work, deepen its significance, and aid the reader in seeing parallels between it and other works of literature and literary topics.

Choose one of the classes you are taking this summer or one of the classes you took this past spring.

Discuss how you might use 5 of the 18 ideas presented to improve your learning in the class you chose.

18 IDEAS TO IMPROVE YOUR LEARNING:

Idea 1. Make sure you thoroughly understand the requirements of each class, how it will be taught, and what will be expected of you. Ask questions about the grading policies and ask for advice on how best to prepare for class.

Idea 2. Become an active learner. Be prepared to work ideas into your thinking by active reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Idea 3. Think of each subject you study as a form of thinking. If you are in a history class, your goal should be to think historically; in a chemistry class, to think chemically, and so forth.

Idea 4. Become a questioner. Engage in lectures and discussions by asking questions. If you don't ask questions, you will probably not discover what you do and do not know.

Idea 5. Look for interconnections. The content in every class is always a system of interconnected ideas, never a random list of things to memorize. Don't memorize like a parrot. Study like a detective, always relating new learning to previous learning.

Idea 6. Think of your instructor as your coach. Think of yourself as a team member trying to practice the thinking exemplified by your instructor. For example, in an algebra class, think of yourself as going out for the algebra team and your instructor as demonstrating how to prepare for the games (tests).

Idea 7. Think of the textbook as the thinking of the author. Your job is to think the thinking of the author. The best way to do this is to frequently role-play the author. Explain the main points of the text to another student, as if you were the author.

Idea 8. Consider class time as a time in which you practice thinking within the subject, using the fundamental concepts and principles of the course. Don't sit back passively, waiting for knowledge to fall into your head like rain into a rain barrel. It won't.

Idea 9. Relate content whenever possible to issues, problems, and practical situations in your life. If you can't connect it to your life, you don't know it.

Idea 10. Figure out what study and learning skills you need to develop. Practice those skills whenever possible. Recognizing and correcting your weaknesses is a strength.

Idea 11. Frequently ask yourself: "Can I explain this to someone who is not in this class?" If not, you haven't learned it well enough.

Idea 12. Identify and elaborate for yourself the key concept of the course during the first two or three class meetings. For example, in a biology course, try explaining what biology is in your own words. Then relate that definition to each segment of what you learn afterward. Fundamental ideas are the basis for all others.

Idea 13. Routinely ask questions to fill in the missing pieces in your learning. Ask them of yourself and your teacher. Can you elaborate further on idea x? Can you give an example of idea y? If you are not creating everyday examples for ideas, you are not connecting what you are learning to your life.

Idea 14. Test yourself before you come to class by trying to summarize, orally or in writing, the main points of the previous class meeting. If you cannot summarize the main points, you haven't learned them.

Idea 15. Learn to test your thinking by using intellectual standards. Ask yourself: Am I being clear? Accurate? Relevant? Logical? Am I looking for what is most significant?

Idea 16. Use writing as a way to learn. Write summaries in your own words of important points from the textbook or other reading material. Make up test questions and write out answers to your own questions.

Idea 17. Frequently evaluate tour listening. Are you actively listening for main points? Can you summarize what your instructor is saying in your own words? Can you explain what is meant by key terms?

Idea 18. Frequently evaluate your reading. Are you reading the textbook actively? Are you asking questions as you read? Can you distinguish what you understand from what you don't?

Read the extract from 'The hunting of Shumba' by Kingsley Fairbridge and
answer the questions. This poem describes the way Shumba, a lion, hunts his prey.
A grass-blade breaking!
Swift in awful calm,
The mighty limbs at length along the ground;
Steel muscles tightening -
A sense of harm,
Intangible... no shadow of a sound...
But savage eyes unveil'd,
Intense as death;
Purs'd lips and lower'd ears and bated breath, Dread vigour hail'd
From every nerve and tissue - crouching there
Blent with grass,- incarnate, awful fear !
A leap a scream
a thud; And it is done.
Silence awhile, and the hot smell of blood.
Silence, then slowly, with the sinking sun, The rend of flesh....The crickets wake and sing,
The frogs take up their song, the night-jars wing
Weird in the azure dusk. As had been will'd,

how is news reporting is different from that of abroad?

Answers

Hello There! Your answer can be found below.

Sometimes journalists fly out to the country every time there is something to report about or they live in the countries they report for.

An American local station or a national or international news company like CNN or BBC are two options for journalists to work for. Usually, they reside in the nation where their jobs are. For instance, BBC has US-based reporters who cover US national news from the District of Columbia, exactly like US reporters who frequently cover US national news from the White House or Congress. All major US cities and a large number of smaller towns have local affiliate stations that are connected to big national broadcasters like ABC, NBC, and CBS. They employ reporters to cover local and regional news in the field, as well as other reporters who work mostly in the studio as news anchors, producers, and directors. Many different nations employ freelance journalists who may or may not reside in the regions where they are working to provide news coverage for important organizations. Instead of establishing a regular home, they can choose to spend many months or years traveling while living out of a duffelbag and with only a few personal things. They could do regular employment for one or more businesses. There used to be more true national news organization personnel who were designated as "foreign correspondents" many years ago. Regular field reporting by the same foreign journalists who would be on longer assignments in a given nation or portion of the world was common, especially during prolonged wars like the one in Vietnam. A few years ago, the movie "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" centered on three fictitious journalists covering a battle zone.
