With modern information and communication technologies making the world
smaller, many people question whether globalization is more positive or more
negative. As nations become more integrated into a single global market, our
traditional cultural barriers are being breached and more opportunities for
international exchange are being created. But with the fading borders between
nations, new questions arise. Does economic growth from the global market tend
to favor the rich and leave the poor behind? And, perhaps most importantly, will
globalization lead to homogenization, creating a world in which everything will
look, sound, and feel the same? Are nations, as well as individuals, losing their
identities as they become more globalized? Some have prophesied that in the
not-too-distant future, American tastes, habits, and values will completely
dominate the world. Is globalization really the same as "Americanization"?
One of the strongest arguments against globalization is that poorer countries
will not benefit from the global market. Inequalities will widen, and the poor will
be left out as the rich become more prosperous. Developed countries already have
a greater share of resources, and globalization will only reinforce their wealth and
power. The richest countries, including the United States, will pool their resources
and gain a monopoly over the global market. Some believe that globalization
should proceed, if at all, under a set of restrictive new rules on issues such as labor,
the environment, and human rights.
Will everyone's worldview soon be seen through a prism of America? People
drink Coke and Pepsi around the world. McDonald's now has more than 25,000
outlets in 119 countries; a new restaurant opens somewhere in the world every
17 hours. People around the world watch the same American movies and listen to
the same American music. In recent decades, we have witnessed the growth of
American mega-malls all over the world. The Internet functions primarily in the
English language and is dominated by American content. It is estimated that 70
percent of Internet Web sites are American. Have people begun to register the fact
that much of life is, indeed, American?
But globalization does not necessarily have to mean Americanization. Rather, it
could be a blending of many different cultures. For example, there is currently a
couloration of people from other nations to the United States, one that is
mass
unprecedented. Immigrants and refugees import their cultural values into the
United States as much as they assimilate American culture. Many would-be
refugees manage to make their way to the United States and import their cultural
values as well. In fact, America is not really a melting pot in the sense that
immigrants' cultures dissolve into American culture. In fact, they remain distinct.
Just as American tastes and values have influenced the world, American tastes and
values have been influenced: They have become more eclectic-in food, music,
and even religion.
Finally, one thing people fear most about globalization is a loss of individual
identity. They fear that a sense of shallowness might come from living in "the
global village, as tastes and cultural attitudes become more homogeneous.

The sentence that uses the word incorrectly is option D, "He appeared suddenly on the intrinsic stage -- the moment we had been waiting for," as seen below.

What is wrong with the sentence?

The problem with the sentence mentioned above is the incorrect use of the word "intrinsic." That word means "natural," "innate," "inborn," or "inherent."

Therefore, it would not make sense for someone to appear on an intrinsic stage, if stage means the platform where people perform, as it seems to mean in that case.

For that reason, option D is the right answer choice for this question about vocabulary.

Write one paragraph for each text identifying and explaining how Odysseus and Jocko Willink used their leadership skills to lead their men. Then, write one final paragraph identifying and explaining anything they could have, or should have, done differently so they and their men didn't suffer.

Answers

Answer:

In Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey," Odysseus is depicted as a skilled and resourceful leader. He uses his intelligence and strategic thinking to outsmart his enemies and overcome obstacles on his journey home. He is also able to rally his men and keep their spirits high, even in the face of adversity. For example, when his men are tempted to eat the forbidden cattle of the sun god Helios, Odysseus comes up with a plan to distract them by having them build a raft to escape. Additionally, he shows courage and determination in facing challenges head-on, such as when he blinds the cyclops Polyphemus.

Jocko Willink, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL, is also known for his leadership skills. He emphasizes the importance of discipline, self-control and ownership in his leadership style. He is a strong advocate of the "Leadership by Example" principle, which he feels is the most effective way to inspire and lead his men. He is also known for his ability to make clear, decisive decisions and to communicate effectively with his team, which helps to build trust and respect.

In terms of areas where Odysseus could have done things differently, one could argue that his tendency to be impulsive and prideful at times led to unnecessary complications and suffering for both himself and his men. For example, revealing his true name to Polyphemus, who then cursed Odysseus and his crew, was a clear example of pride getting in the way of good judgement. Similarly, Jocko Willink, could have benefited from more focus on the well-being of his men. While he does prioritize their safety and well-being, his relentless focus on achieving the mission could have led to burnout or other negative consequences for his team.

Answer: B. Ginsberg suggests that both he and Whitman are out of step with the norms of mainstream society.

Explanation: The poem takes place in a supermarket, which symbolizes the conformity and consumerism of modern society.  By invoking Walt Whitman, a renowned poet known for his celebration of individuality and nonconformity, Ginsberg is expressing a desire to break free from societal constraints and embrace a more authentic and unconventional way of life.

What is snow?

Snowstorms feed on supplies of atmospheric moisture and cold air to organise and grow. Snowflakes form around airborne particles by drawing supercooled water droplets, which then solidify into crystals with a hexagonal structure. Platelets, needles, columns, and rime are among the basic shapes that snowflakes can take on. Snow may blow into drifts when it builds up into a snowpack. Accumulated snow undergoes changes over time due to sintering, sublimation, and freeze-thaw. A glacier can develop in areas with cold enough winters for year-round accumulation. Otherwise, snow normally melts over the course of a season, causing runoff into streams and rivers and recharging groundwater.

How does Nixon use language to make it sound like he is not as guilty of doing some
wrong?

Answers

Answer:
Nixon uses language to downplay his guilt by suggesting that any mistakes made were unintentional and done in the best interest of the country, expressing remorse for any harm caused.

Explanation:

In his resignation speech, Nixon uses language to downplay his guilt by using phrases such as "if some of my judgments were wrong" and "they were made in what I believed at the time to be the best interest of the Nation." This suggests that he made mistakes, but they were not intentional and were done with the belief that they were in the best interest of the country. He also uses the phrase "I regret deeply any injuries that may have been done," which implies that any harm caused was unintentional and that he is remorseful. Overall, Nixon uses language to present himself as someone who made mistakes, but they were not done with malicious intent, and he expresses remorse for any harm caused.

Nixon uses language that casts doubt on his actions and portrays himself as having made mistakes out of a sincere desire to do what was best for the nation. He acknowledges that some of his decisions were wrong, but he also suggests that he believed he was acting in the nation's best interest at the time. This serves to portray him not as someone who deliberately and maliciously acted wrongfully, but rather someone who simply made poor judgments while trying to do the right thing.
