Yes, Nahat is correct in stating that social conditions in Ireland influenced the writing of Jonathan Swift's essay.

Did Swift address the causes of these conditions?

In the essay "A Modest Proposal," Swift critiques the socio-economic conditions in Ireland most particularly the poverty and famine that was rampant at the time. He suggests that one solution to this problem is for the Irish to start selling their children as food to wealthy English landlords.

This proposal is satirical and meant to highlight the absurdity of the situation and the lack of action taken by the English government to address the underlying issues causing poverty in Ireland.

Read the excerpt from Up from Slavery by Booker T. Washington.

Our greatest danger is that in the great leap from slavery to freedom we may overlook the fact that the masses of us are to live by the productions of our hands, and fail to keep in mind that we shall prosper in proportion as we learn to dignify and glorify common labour and put brains and skill into the common occupations of life; shall prosper in proportion as we learn to draw the line between the superficial and the substantial, the ornamental gewgaws of life and the useful. No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem. It is at the bottom of life we must begin, and not at the top. Nor should we permit our grievances to overshadow our opportunities.

Read the excerpt from The Souls of Black Folk by W. E. B. Du Bois.

And Mr. Washington thus faces the triple paradox of his career:

1. He is striving nobly to make Negro artisans business men and property-owners; but it is utterly impossible, under modern competitive methods, for workingmen and property-owners to defend their rights and exist without the right of suffrage.

2. He insists on thrift and self-respect, but at the same time counsels a silent submission to civic inferiority such as is bound to sap the manhood of any race in the long run.

3. He advocates common-school and industrial training, and depreciates institutions of higher learning; but neither the Negro common-schools, nor Tuskegee itself, could remain open a day were it not for teachers trained in Negro colleges, or trained by their graduates.

Which statement best compares the claims of the two arguments?

Washington thinks that agricultural work should be championed as a way to advance, while Du Bois looks down on industrial labor.
Washington promotes manual labor as a path to success, while Du Bois argues that higher education supports other types of success.
Washington declares that most people can be successful at farming their own property, while Du Bois says that owning property is impossible.
Washington says that time spent arguing about inequalities undermines opportunities, while Du Bois advocates for civic activism.

Answers

Statement "Washington says that time spent arguing about inequalities undermines opportunities, while Du Bois advocates for civic activism." best compares the claims of the two arguments. So the option D is correct.

Washington contends that the time spent debating disparities may be better utilized by concentrating on enhancing chances. Along with promoting common-school and industrial training, he also encourages thrift and self-respect.

Du Bois, on the other hand, is promoting civic activity since he contends that workingmen and property owners cannot defend their rights without the right to vote. He also makes the point that if it weren't for teachers who were taught at or by alumni of Negro universities, the Negro common-schools and Tuskegee itself would not exist.

Washington essentially urges people to concentrate on enhancing their prospects and talents, whereas Du Bois promotes civic activity to defend and advance rights. So the option D is correct.

People do not always do the things we want them to do. No matter how reasonable or minimal our expectations may be, there are times when we are let down. Naturally, we feel upset and hurt when our expectations are not met. We dread confrontations because they are unpleasant and can damage relationships. Yet not confronting a person does not solve the problem because unresolved issues also affect relationships in an adverse way. Actually, the real problem lies in our style of confrontation, not in the issue. Typically, we use character-based confrontations. They help in venting our anger and hurt, but that is the only thing they do. They lead to angry show-downs and bring all discussions to a grinding halt.

It is important to remember that self-image is the most important possession of all human beings. It is the way we view and regard ourselves in our own eyes and in the eyes of others. As self-conscious beings, we are acutely aware of our image and constantly work towards protecting it from any damage. We also seek approval from others about our own self-image. We feel distraught if we sense that there is even a slight threat to our self image, because our character is the essence of our lives.

To ensure a rational dialogue over dashed expectations, we need to deploy issue based confrontations. They involve an explanation of which actions have bothered us, in what manner and what changes we would like from the other person.

Answers

When using issue-based confrontations, it is important to:

Stay calm: It can be difficult to remain calm when we feel upset or hurt, but it is important to avoid reacting with anger or aggression. Take a deep breath and try to approach the situation in a calm and rational manner.

Be specific: Clearly articulate the specific behavior or action that has caused the problem. Use specific examples and avoid making generalizations or attacking the person's character.

Express how you feel: It is important to express how the behavior or action has made you feel, but avoid placing blame or accusing the other person. Use "I" statements to express your own feelings and avoid using "you" statements that can sound accusatory.

Propose a solution: Instead of simply expressing your grievances, propose a solution or suggest a change in behavior that would resolve the issue.

By using issue-based confrontations, we can have more productive conversations that lead to positive outcomes and stronger relationships.

serenely: recklessly :: timidly: ____
A. arrogantly
B. fearfully
C. bashfully

serenely: recklessly :: timidly: fearfully. The correct answer is B.

In the given pair of words, "serenely" and "recklessly", we can observe a contrast in their meanings. "Serenely" implies a calm and peaceful demeanor, while "recklessly" implies a lack of caution or consideration for consequences.

Thus, we can conclude that the relationship between these two words is one of contrast or opposition.
Now, we need to find a similar relationship between the second pair of words, "timidly" and another word.

"Timidly" refers to a hesitant or shy attitude, indicating a lack of confidence or boldness. Therefore, we need to find a word that contrasts with this meaning, just as "recklessly" contrasted with "serenely".
Out of the given options, "arrogantly" would not be a suitable answer as it does not contrast with "timidly".

Instead, "arrogantly" has a similar meaning to "recklessly" in that it implies overconfidence or a lack of consideration for others.

We were all taught good and bad. Good was kind, bright, and soft. While evil was cruel, dark, and ridged.

Good was taught in fairytales as well as evil. They had never taught it in real life though. They had not told the dangers of reality to children. They kept them sheltered until they were older. Sheltered until fairytales were something of a myth and reality hit them hard.

Aubrette, who went by Aubry, had a fairytale life until her mother passed away when she was twelve. After her mother's death, her fairytale world crumbled, and reality began to set in. The first sign of this was the loss of her mother, who was like a fairy godmother to her. Now, she felt like she had lost both her mother and her fairy godmother. Then, her family moved away, which was something that never happened to princesses unless a prince was involved. She had to leave all of her friends behind, and when she started attending a new school, she encountered people who were not kind to her. This was also something that never happened in fairytales, where everyone adored the princess.

It was three years later, Aubry had given up on her “fairytale” and gave in to reality. At the beginning of 10th grade, she decided to change her wardrobe. She put on a black jumper top and a pair of black and white checkered pants.

She looked at the time on her phone. 7:34. She was going to be late if she didn’t hurry up. She went over to her bathroom and picked up her hairbrush. Admiring her reflection, she ran her fingers through her hair until it was just right. She couldn't help but smile at the sight of herself in the mirror. Her style was complete thanks to the wolf cut her barber had perfected. She hurriedly left the bathroom and grabbed a pair of earrings at random, promptly putting them on.

“You are going to be late,” her dad grumbled tiredly. She nodded and proceeded to put on her shoes. She smiled as she looked at her new, fresh pair of black boots. The smell of the leather filled her senses.

She reminded herself that she was going to be late and hurriedly grabbed her bag, running towards the bus stop. "You've arrived just in time," the bus driver said with a gruff voice, followed by a hearty laugh. (to be continued)
