ESSAY ON THE LIFE OF MILES DAVIS

Miles Davis, undoubtedly was born in a time marked by racism, although he was characterized by being a genius with the trumpet, he was a victim of racism, yet Miles with that daring personality and with that spirit of leadership that characterized him, He did not prevent those events from discouraging him from continuing to play, from continuing to create melodies with his trumpet that reached the hearts of all kinds of people regardless of their race, color, or religion, Miles through his music reflected that desire for equality for all within a nation that resisted to tolerate and give freedom of expression. That is why Miles today is remembered not only as a great ingenuity that opened the way for other people to also enter music. Miles Davis was the dominant force in jazz for at least thirty-five years. He listened, touched, and sought his own perspective; his gaze was always focused on the present and the future, never on the past. He argued that music must change (like the world) to maintain its significance. He never stood still, he never tamed, he never sought his comfort space; was constantly being reborn. Like every superior artist, with each change he left behind one style or way of working to face another; In this way he gained new followers and lost others, gained new accolades and new detractors. And none of it mattered to him.

Between 1975 and 1980, Miles stopped playing to deepen and ultimately abandon his brutal cocaine addiction. At the end of that period, in a self-taught and almost therapeutic way, to finish cleaning his body and mind of the drug intake that he maintained for almost four decades, he took up the brush and devoted himself to reflecting his thoughts on the canvas. What started as a hobby became a true passion for the musician. He took classes in New York with Jo Gelbard, with whom he developed a very good and sincere relationship; in fact, she accompanied him in his last days.

Miles's routine included painting in the morning for about five hours, then practicing with his instrument for a couple of hours, boxing, and finally composing and recording. “Painting for me is therapeutic. It keeps my mind busy with something while I'm not playing. "  Very few of his paintings were exhibited during his lifetime, and it was only after his death that the more than one hundred works by Miles began touring galleries and museums around the world in their own right. At his last European concert in Paris in 1991, he played against the background of one of his large paintings.

Which of the following best describes how the narrator describes nature, especially the cold?AThe narrator describes the cold as a pervasive, almost personified force.BThe narrator describes nature constantly changing and unpredictable.CThe narrator describes nature, even the dog, as indifferent to the struggles of the man.DThe narrator describes the cold as merely an element that can be easily conquered by men and fire.

Answers

This question is in reference to the short story "To Build a Fire", by Jack London.

Answer:

The options best suited for the way the narrator describes nature and the cold is:

C. The narrator describes nature, even the dog, as indifferent to the struggles of the man.

Explanation:

"To Build a Fire" is a short story by author Jack London in which a man learns a most valuable lesson at a very high cost. The main character ignores how powerful nature is, thinking too much of his own skills. He is new to the winter at the Yukon region and naive enough to forget his own weaknesses as a human being.

The narrator in the story makes it clear that nature is not concerned with man. Nature has no mind, it simply is, in a powerful manner. It is man who wishes to conquer nature but to no avail. Throughout the story, the man thinks to himself that "it is certainly cold". That's it. Simply put, no exaggeration, no personification.

The dog that accompanies the man, for instance, is merely confused by the man's lack of fear. The dog understands danger better than the man. Notice that it is indifferent toward this man. What concerns it is survival. The same goes for nature. It is relentless, unstoppable. The cold is still cold, even if it kills someone:

Never in the dog’s experience had it known a man  to sit like that in the snow and make no fire. As the evening grew  darker, its eager longing for the fire mastered it. [...] Later, the dog howled loudly. And  still later it moved close to the man and caught the smell of death.  This made the animal back away. A little longer it delayed, howling  under the stars that leaped and danced and shone brightly in the cold  sky. Then it turned and ran along the trail toward the camp it knew,  where there were the other food providers and fire providers.

Our region has experienced a record drought this year. The water level in the local reservoir has dropped by several feet. As a result, Councilman Garcia is proposing a water ban this summer. The ban would limit how often people can water their yards. There are several ways this ban will be effective.

To improve the argument that the ban will be effective, what would be the best fact to add?

a fact about Councilman Garcia
a fact about the history of the region
a fact about the impact of the drought
a fact about the creation of the reservoir

Answers

Answer:

To improve the argument that the ban will be effective, the best fact to addwould be:

a fact about the impact of the drought

Explanation:

Two reasons are backing this answer, in the first place to make aware people we need to provide arguments that are meaningful for the topic. Our topic is the droughts' impact because as a response to them Councilman Garcia proposed a strategy. Thus, we need to justify Councilman Garcia's proposal. And to let people know why they need it, we need to explain to them the impact of the drought. So they could accept it. In the second place, it is all about convincing them we have the correct point of view and we will only achieve that by providing evidence of it,

A. They help readers understand the logic behind certain dress codes in sports.
B. They highlight how absurd people’s criticism of women’s appearances and dress
was.
C. They emphasize how male and female athletes are criticized for what they wear
in sports.
D. They show how people's views about women’s fashion in sports have largely
remained the same.

Answers

Answer:

B.

Explanation:

"Serena Williams' catsuit controversy evokes the battle over women wearing shorts" is an article written by Deirdre Clemente. The article talks about the dress of women athletes that have been, time and again, in controversy.

In Paragraph 7 of the article, Clemente added a comment by a sportswriter on women athlete's wear that states that women athletes wear funny clothes that makes them hard to breathe and that they should know what to wear to look elegant and beautiful.

This inclusion of comment by the author highlights the absurdity of people's thoughts regarding women athletes wear. This comment reveals how inane are people in their thoughts about women athletes wearing shorts in games.

Thus the correct answer is option B.
