So where does this gooey treat come from? Marshmallows were first used by the ancient Egyptians. They used the root of the marsh mallow plant to make honey candy. This candy was reserved for royalty and gods. The marsh mallow plant in the past was also used to soothe sore throats.
The marshmallow treat that is now found today is a little bit different. In the past, people used marsh mallow sap, sugar, and egg whites. Now, it is made of sugar or corn syrup, gelatin, cornstarch, and water. The addition of cornstarch helps speed up the process of making marshmallows. Although marshmallows have changed, they are still a delight to eat.
