Read the excerpt from "Little Brother" and answer the question.

In the panic following a terrorist attack, Marcus's friend Darryl is stabbed. Marcus manages to flag down a vehicle to ask for help.

[1] It was a military-looking Jeep, like an armored Hummer, only it didn't have any military insignia on it. The car skidded to a stop just in front of me, and I jumped back and lost my balance and ended up on the road. I felt the doors open near me, and then saw a confusion of booted feet moving close by. I looked up and saw a bunch of military-looking guys in coveralls, holding big, bulky rifles and wearing hooded gas masks with tinted face-plates.

[2] I barely had time to register them before those rifles were pointed at me. I'd never looked down the barrel of a gun before, but everything you've heard about the experience is true. You freeze where you are, time stops, and your heart thunders in your ears. I opened my mouth, then shut it, then, very slowly, I held my hands up in front of me.

[3] The faceless, eyeless armed man above me kept his gun very level. I didn't even breathe. Van was screaming something and Jolu was shouting and I looked at them for a second and that was when someone put a coarse sack over my head and cinched it tight around my windpipe, so quick and so fiercely I barely had time to gasp before it was locked on me. I was pushed roughly but dispassionately onto my stomach and something went twice around my wrists and then tightened up as well, feeling like baling wire and biting cruelly. I cried out and my own voice was muffled by the hood.

[4] I was in total darkness now and I strained my ears to hear what was going on with my friends. I heard them shouting through the muffling canvas of the bag, and then I was being impersonally hauled to my feet by my wrists, my arms wrenched up behind my back, my shoulders screaming.

[5] I stumbled some, then a hand pushed my head down and I was inside the Hummer. More bodies were roughly shoved in beside me.

[6] "Guys?" I shouted, and earned a hard thump on my head for my trouble. I heard Jolu respond, then felt the thump he was dealt, too. My head rang like a gong.

[7] "Hey," I said to the soldiers. "Hey, listen! We're just high school students. I wanted to flag you down because my friend was bleeding. Someone stabbed him." I had no idea how much of this was making it through the muffling bag. I kept talking. "Listen—this is some kind of misunderstanding. We've got to get my friend to a hospital—"

[8] Someone went upside my head again. It felt like they used a baton or something—it was harder than anyone had ever hit me in the head before. My eyes swam and watered and I literally couldn't breathe through the pain. A moment later, I caught my breath, but I didn't say anything. I'd learned my lesson.

Using information in the extract on page 1 and your own interpretation, explain how Hanrahan has explored the relationship between her parents, in her series, Bob and Ronda. Ensure you use examples from the work to support your discussion. (5-6 sentences)

Barbara Hanrahan
Born in 1939 and died in 1991 in Adelaide, South Australia.
The strange mix of naïve and fantasy characterises Hanrahan’s prints. Her work has an intimacy, which draws the viewer increasingly into a macabre world, which Hanrahan creates. The intimacy is created through the use of decorative elements such as textured rugs and cloth, which give the viewer the impression that they are looking into a domestic scene. A familiar scene, which on closer inspection, is strange, haunting and fraught with danger. Her work has been described as ‘fairy-like and vulnerable’.

In 1963 she travelled to London. The trip was to become one of many. In London she worked at the central school and was influenced by the works of Gertude Hermes and the early pop art of Hockney and Peter Blake.

In the mid sixties Hanrahan produced a series of works which explored the nature of her parents' relationship. The series titled ‘Bob and Ronda’ explored the bond between her parents, a bond that she had not witnessed as her father had died when she was one. Barbara was their only child and was reared by her mother, who worked as a commercial artist.
Many of Hanrahans images play with themes from popular culture, especially pop songs. Her works have a strong narrative and often combine images of frivolity with a note of fear, pain and insecurity.

Barbara Hanrahan created a distinct and powerful body of work during her career, which spanned from the 1960s until her death in 1991. Trained as a printmaker in Adelaide and London, she lived between the two cities for much of her adult life. Both of these places exerted profound influence on her work; Hanrahan drew on the experiences of her childhood in Adelaide for much of her imagery, while the social upheavals of London in the 1960s, and artistic influences of the British Pop artists, formed her stylistic development. Using the expressive possibilities of the printmaking medium, she explored with an unflinching directness some of the most complex facets of female experience. Hanrahan’s prints delve into the fraught nature of intimate relationships between women; men and women; and women’s relationships with their own bodies. Returning to and re-working images created over several decades, Hanrahan treated these themes with a mixture of rawness and humour.

Answer:

Hanrahan worked as an intimacy that draws the viewer increasingly. This made her explorable and much catchable to make the relationship influencing and cooperating.

(SUPER EASY IF YOU READ THE PASSAGE)

Memories of a Memory

Have you ever witnessed something amazing, shocking or surprising and found when describing the event that your story seems to change the more you tell it? Have you ever experienced a time when you couldn't really describe something you saw in a way that others could understand? If so, you may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable as evidence in scientific inquiries and trials. New insights into human memory suggest human memories are really a mixture of many non-factual things.

First, memory is vague. Imagine your room at home or a classroom you see every day. Most likely, you could describe the room very generally. You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations. But the image you describe will never be as specific or detailed as if you were looking at the actual room. Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details. So when a witness tries to identify someone, her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people. There are lots of different kinds of "tall."

Second, memory uses general knowledge to fill in gaps. Our brains reconstruct events and scenes when we remember something. To do this, our brains use other memories and other stories when there are gaps. For example, one day at a library you go to quite frequently, you witness an argument between a library patron and one of the librarians. Later, when telling a friend about the event, your brain may remember a familiar librarian behind the desk rather than the actual participant simply because it is recreating a familiar scene. In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story.

Third, your memory changes over time. It also changes the more you retell the story. Documented cases have shown eyewitnesses adding detail to testimony that could not have been known at the time of the event. Research has also shown that the more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is. You may have noticed this yourself. The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add, or what your brain wants to add, to the account. You may also notice that you drop certain details from previous tellings of the story.

With individual memories all jumbled up with each other, it is hard to believe we ever know anything to be true. Did you really break your mother's favorite vase when you were three? Was that really your father throwing rocks into the river with you when you were seven? The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed. When it comes to memory, however, we may want to start carrying video cameras if we want to record the true picture.

QUESTIONS:

1.) Which line from the text best explains the main problem with recalling details of a scene or room?

You could name the color of the walls, the floors, the decorations
Memory tends to save a blurry image of what we have seen rather than specific details
Her brain may recall that the person was tall, but not be able to say how tall when faced with several tall people
In effect, your brain is combining memories to help you tell the story

2.)Which line from the text best explains why the author suggests we start carrying video cameras?

You may understand why some experts think eyewitness testimony is unreliable
The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add
With individual memories all jumbled up with each other
The human brain may be quite remarkable indeed

3.) Which line from the text best explains the main reason memories change?

Most likely, you could describe the room very generally.
The more a witness's account is told, the less accurate it is
The next time you are retelling a story, notice what you add
You may also notice that you drop certain details
