Read the following quote. What do you think it means? Do you agree or disagree with the speaker? We teach girls shame... We make them feel as though by being born female they're already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot see they have desire. They grow up to be women who silence themselves. They grow up to be women who cannot say what they truly think, and they grow up -- and this is the worst thing we did to girls -- they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form. Note: Pretense is defined as attempting to make something that is false true. Meaning they lie in order to make something true, or they are faking their emotions, feelings, wishes. In the space below, write one paragraph (4-6 complete sentences) that explains what you think the quote means. Do you agree or disagree with the speaker? Provide your response with opinions or examples to support your explanation.

Answers

I think this quote is explaining how girls are taught from the beginning, shame. When girls turn into women, they believe they must be quiet, they must be happy, and they must be perfect. I disagree with this quote for this generation. I believe that we have broken through those previous barriers and are now teaching women strength, courageousness, and the power to be ourselves. I do agree with the line, "they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form.". From my experience, I believe that women cannot have the same emotions as men, because it may come across different. A powerful woman is seen as snarky or rude, whereas a powerful man is admired.

answer the questions. This poem describes the way Shumba, a lion, hunts his prey.
A grass-blade breaking!
Swift in awful calm,
The mighty limbs at length along the ground;
Steel muscles tightening -
A sense of harm,
Intangible... no shadow of a sound...
But savage eyes unveil'd,
Intense as death;
Purs'd lips and lower'd ears and bated breath, Dread vigour hail'd
From every nerve and tissue - crouching there
Blent with grass,- incarnate, awful fear !
A leap a scream
a thud; And it is done.
Silence awhile, and the hot smell of blood.
Silence, then slowly, with the sinking sun, The rend of flesh....The crickets wake and sing,
The frogs take up their song, the night-jars wing
Weird in the azure dusk. As had been will'd,

Now, polymer is any member of a class of natural or synthetic substances composed of very large chain molecules, called macromolecules, that are multiples of simpler chemical units called monomers. Thus, looking at the options the only one that is related to it would be Fiber.

What is repetitive rhetoric?

Repetition as rhetoric is aimed at stressing a particular point. The intent of analogy and parallelism is to demonstrate the similarities between certain things. All of these types of rhetoric can be seen in the text above.

The writer makes an analogy with the condition of the dead man whom he believes still lives. Parallelism can be seen in the comparison of the various ways in which the man lives in the heart of his people, the liberal and the beneficent. The sameness of the statements makes them parallel to each other.

Repetition was also employed for the purpose of emphasis. All of these were aimed at helping the reader to see how the man lives on even though he was now dead. Therefore, we can say that the author used repetition, analogy, and parallelism in this excerpt from the passage.

For many of us, the negative experiences that we maybe could have avoided have turned out to have helped us learn some of the most valuable lessons in our lives. But there are often easier ways to learn lessons, and as we get older, hopefully we discover ways to learn without having to hurt ourselves or others in the process.

Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True

A Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High

[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.

[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."

[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.

[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).

[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.

[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use. Whatever you do, don't turn someone else's hardship into your vacation.

What are two strategies the speaker uses to develop the point that voluntour opportunities are not legitimate ways to learn about other cultures?

Let = the true mean number of eggs the chickens lay each day. Under the assumption that the true mean number of eggs is 16, 100 simulated means for samples of size 10 are shown in the dotplot. A dotplot titled mean number of eggs. A number line labeled simulated means of samples, n = 10, goes from 15.0 to 17.2. A sample mean of eggs of 15.1 or less only occurred twice. Using the dotplot, is there evidence that the chickens are laying fewer than 16 eggs? Yes, since a sample mean number of eggs of 15.1 eggs or less only occurred twice in simulated values, there is evidence that the true mean number of eggs is less than 16. Yes, since a sample mean number of eggs of 15.1 is less than the mean number of eggs of 16, there is evidence to prove that the true mean number of eggs is less than 16. No, since a sample mean number of eggs of 15.1 is only 0.9 eggs less than a mean number of eggs of 16, there is insufficient evidence that the true mean number of eggs is less than 16. No, since a sample mean number of eggs of 15.1 never occurred in the dotplot, it is not possible that a random sample of 10 eggs will have a mean number of eggs of 15.1. Therefore, there is insufficient evidence that the true mean number of eggs is less than 16. The function D(t)=18t2130t gives the distance a car going a certain speed will skid in t seconds.
